I can ASSURE you that no well to do MFH parent whose kid gets into Berkeley Carroll, Regis, or Dalton (and for that matter Stuy and BxSci as well) is sending them across the water to go to RSF’s NJ hs.

Def top hs in my city (major metro) and I think top in my high population (T5) state, although I’d have to check that.

We typically sent about 1.5 students a year to each of HYPMS, then 2-5 to each of the lower ivies and their peers (duke, Chicago, etc). Also typically sent kids to AWS and the services academies but the years numbers were more varied for obvious reasons. In total we probably sent 25-35% of the class to putative “T30” type colleges and universities, although that number is a bit misleading bc there was a large self selecting contingent that would choose our (T50) state flagship despite having the credentials for “better” schools (1400 sat, top 10% looking grades-although we didn’t rank, and etc)

$ for this caliber of private school is worth it versus even our local public option (USNews T400 public HS) because it buys you a significantly increased chance at upper tier schools (had kids matriculate to every Ivy except one last year - legitimate stat, not the smoke and mirrors "admitted" one schools play where two asian kids rack up all the elite admits).

In all honesty someone like me should've gone public. I had the highest SAT in my class but was *literally* bottom half in class rank (probably bottom third, but they didn't divvy it up like that). Even at a "good" public school, someone like me would have been at least top-20%, and at a shitty one I'd have probably competed for valedictorian -- I'm not trying to be a dick to the poor kids on xo, but I subsequently went and met a lot of kids who were valedictorians of trash public schools, and it's obvious that they'd have been middling where I went. It's a risky call though, because if your kid isn't actually all that smart there's a real risk that these public schools legitimately don't prepare you for college, and that's how you end up with liberal-arts major kids.

EDIT: Also, one major difference between top HSs in my region versus TSAO (and I'm sure the NE more generally) is that sports are still taken SERIOUSLY. I was a very good athlete in 3 sports but not D1A-level at anything, and I can without any hesitation say that HS was the most difficult time of my life -- I don't mean socially; I mean for a lot of the year I had to wake up at 5 to get to school for team workouts, and on most days I was getting home at like 8 -- and I did not flourish academically in that environment.
