Namely, that once you shed the concept of exclusivism you need up knee deep in the musings of "spiritual" 50 year old white women from California.
Go watch interviews of rich white North Americans who wanted to join ISIS. A common thread across them is that in the secular/spiritual West there is a distinct lack of direction and no meaningful bedrock understanding of the "right way to live". This is the natural outcome of what you and MiG are talking about. I have a lot more respect for a practicing muslim, for example, than some "spiritual" hippy. |

(1) you're not going to out-manly islam. christianity, even straight up medieval western christianity, will absolutely get jihad'd in a manliness/dick measuring contest. you can suppress the touchy feely lovey dovey shit if you want (certainly i can understand not wanting to give the secularized version of that stuff any air time in the church) but it's a real part of the faith
(2) i don't think the church should actively orient itself/cater to "spirital, but not religious" types, don't get me wrong, but if the church can't find a healthy way to dialogue with people that are turned off by aggressive exclusive talk without just presenting a watered down version of the faith then we're going to lose a lot of people that are spiritually hungry but going to end up looking elsewhere. |

I think that many of those ISIS converts, if they had even the slightest anchoring in the Christian moral framework would never have considered flying off to Syria.
Ultimately people need exclusivism just pragmatically. There might be a handful of "intellectuals" who can operate in the mush but the everyman cannot. That does not mean the exclusivism needs to come at the tip of a sword.

Catholic teaching around social actions (e.g. quadragesimo anno, rerum novarum, the catechism, etc) focus either around how to synchronize the state with Catholic teaching without indicating its necessity OR they tell the individual how to act as a member of the society or economy.
Take usury for example, as a hardcore libertarian I am against a law being passed to stop it. BUT I personally do not engage in it nor do I advocate for it and will speak out against it.
That being said, I'm not 100% certain about what the "line" is when it comes to what to do in our current political environment because I can see someone trying to extend this to things like abortion. Aquinas uses "common good" as the benchmark but does not hash it out well. I think its an open point of discussion. |
