Explanation: The real opponent the US fought in WWII was not Germany or Japan but the British Empire.
The US used WWII to finish the UK as a world power once and for all, dismantle its empire, and take over as global military and economic superpower.

I'm pretty open to historical debunking / playing around with myths etc - but I'm not sure I get your hesitation - do you think it was politically feasible to shrug off pearl harbor and their declaration of war?
Or are you toying around with optimal outcomes and arguing why wouldn't it have been optimal for the u.s. to stay out of it?
Because I'm not sure why a nation responding to an attack and declaration of war should be that surprising, especially adding the context of competing for same asian-Pacific colonial resources

Before Operation Barbarossa or Pearl Harbor - while only losing under 100k soldiers, Hitler had done what nobody else in history had done, not Napoleon, not Caesar - he had conquered and combined what is now approximately the modern day EU, in other words Germany had won the war.
The U.S. entered the war after Pearl Harbor, which was basically the exact moment Barbarossa started to turn around and the Soviet counterattacks from Siberian troops started making progress against the Wehrmacht
Take a look at any of the propaganda films from the time period from the American side - eg Hitler Lives (great 20 minute documentary, trust me it's entertaining as hell) - to get a sense of the hysteria about German Imperialism.
We shouldn't overcomplicate this question - the U.S. didn't want to sit by and wait for the outcome of the war to be a German Reich that included modern day EU + Soviet Union with combined economic production, or possibly a Europe liberated by Stalin with the Red Army pushing well past Berlin because of course it would need to liberate France as well (thus determining her fate), rather it saw its best interest as participating to shape the outcome of the war and the postwar order
We shouldn't underestimate what a well oiled machine the red army was by the end of the war, at least in terms of infantry and tank divisions, and the level of coercion Stalin was able to bring upon the Russian people, levels that the Czar could've only dreamed of
