She was caught red-handed by a few dogged students who exposed her. Most HLS faculty and staff know. They got an email about it on 1/22/21. Harvard Law School Dean John Manning then announced her sudden departure (effective February 2021) to the HLS community on 1/25/21.
Marcia Sells is leaving a school of 2,000 students in the middle of the academic year, during a pandemic, for a newly created diversocrat gig at an opera that has not been in operation (or paying its musicians or other staff) for a year. Put two and two together. She was pushed, hard, and she completely deserved it.
Marcia Lynn Sells threatened to take away multiple HLS students' financial aid for no reason (economic abuse) in efforts to get them to do things they did not want to do.
Marcia Sells wrongfully accused students of academic dishonesty, without evidence and outside of the formal disciplinary process, then tried to cover it up when those students spoke up about it after she trashed their names among faculty.
Marcia Sells explicitly threatened to ruin students' reputations with potential employers ahead of their interviews for jobs at law firms. She threatened them to their faces, with other HLS staff watching. (Ask Susannah Tobin!)
Marcia Sells told an LLM student's brother (his emergency contact) not to see him in the hospital after having him subjected to an involuntary psychiatric exam without reason, and possibly after directing staff at the Harvard-affiliated hospital to destroy the involuntary emergency admission certificate.
Marcia L. Sells sent students she had bullied letters on Harvard Law School letterhead telling them not to communicate with ANY Harvard faculty or staff without her personal approval if they wished to graduate.
Marcia Lyin' Sells put students she didn't like on secret "non-disciplinary" leaves of absence by lying on HLS letterhead that the students had told other staff (namely the Registrar, Lisa Burns) that they did not wish to take their final exams and were basically abandoning their studies. (Luckily, one student caught her in her lie and exposed her in a way that nobody could deny.) Marcia Sells often worked hand-in-hand with Professor Robert Sitkoff (the Administrative Board chair) to do all of this. Professor Robert Sitkoff is also culpable. He, too, is a total disgrace.
Marcia Sells was a monster and an absolute freak. So many students hated her. She was a pathological liar and a sociopath, and she got caught. She was pushed out before more complaints crashed down on John Manning's (and Robert Sitkoff's) cowardly heads. |

At lower T14s it's a rotating gig given to a lawprof for a few years, who presumably gets to teach one less class or something to compensate for the duties. That's the way it should be.
Aside from just being unnecessary, these career "higher education" administrator types creep me the fuck out and their presence should be minimized. As bad as ivory-tower faculty can be, these types are much worse. |
