first team to score in overtime wins. after regulation, each team sends out a player to midfield to meet with the officials. the home team goes first and they are required to say, "we will take the ball on the 50 yard line." the away team can accept that offer or can make any offer of a worse starting position, like "we will take the ball on our own 49."
it continues back and forth with each team having the choice of accepting the opponent's standing offer or of making their own 'worse' offer.
one team finally will say "ok, it's your ball there."
adds a huge poker style element. |

This is modeled after the soccer penalty kicks:
Both teams start at opponents ten and get four downs. Defense only gets ten men. If still tied, same thing but defense only gets nine players, then eight, seven, etc. |

Who would you take out? Would you take out a position, like say a safety, over taking out your worst player?
And then think about when there might be multiple ties until both defenses have zero players! They would have to start it all over again I think. |
