I gather Netflix's 8 hours cover all of book one and parts of books two and three, whereas Tencent's version spends ~22 hours just on book one.
Characterization is by far the worst part of the novels. Most characters are just plot devices and half the time the author literally has they say shit like "Hello [insert random character], I am now going to explain several important factions and concepts in this world for the next 20 pages. Please do not interrupt me." So I don't have a problem with an attempt to rewrite the characters to try to give the audience some real people to root for/against. I do think it is a bit silly to make everyone a single friend group like How I Met Your Mother. The books draw in a bunch of characters from around the world and make it feel like a story about humanity. This is more like some Avengers shit where all the critical people on Earth share three apartments in London. |

Basically the show gets the tone right and follows the broad strokes of the books plot wise, but the characters have all been changed from the book to a point that they’re completely unrecognizable. Book fans are going to hate this, but if you can turn your brain off and watch Netflix sloppa where you forget the books exist the show is probably pretty good

The books are a hard sci-fi treatise that read like Wikipedia articles and sometimes there are some characters who do things in between the author (who is a nuclear engineer) screeding about protons or nuclear bombs in space. |
