The crazy thing about AI is no one really has a clue wtf it will do.

Who would've guest that creative fields would be the first things humans would be replaced at? And it seems like that is probably the first thing to go.

Medicine seems safe, but really all you'd need is some combo of AI plus Thereanos that works and most doctors would be fucked.

I actually think transactional attorneys are in pretty good shape for a while because you still need a human expert to confirm the AI is correct - but it still seems like a ticking time bomb before we are all just replaced by AI and humans are just twiddling our thumbs.

All attorneys will be fucked too. Go look at the latest version of Claude and then go listen to their plans to increase training resources by 100x in the next few years. This is the end of human labor. It’s over in a few years.

It’s the same cope you see on programmer forums. Interestingly, it seems like artists are the least deluded about this and recognize the existential threat posed by Sora and the other diffusion models. Everyone else is burying their heads in the sand

I think there's a material difference though, in that anyone is capable of looking at art and saying "this is good" versus that they are less confident looking at a contract and thinking "this is correct."

Again, obviously eventually AI will replace us all - but i think lawyers have a bit longer run rate because normal people aren't as comfortable reading legal contracts and will want to pay an attorney to reveiw.

I don't think that I'm too special but I think there is at least a brief window where people will want a human to vet the AI's work.

I think transactional lawyers can do this (and maybe the bar can help block AI too).

But i view my job as being willing to read and undersetand boroing contracts no one else wants to read. I presume that that even if AI is writing the contracts (which is a time savings, but a minimum one from a transactional drafting it), that they'll still want a human attorney to review.

I think this is a slight leg up from marketing/branding folks - where a CEO could just say "Write me 500 slogans for a campaign for widgets" and then pick their favorite without employing an entire marketing deparatment...

I actually agree with this but there’s so much room for optimization here that it’s basically irrelevant. This is not a mature technology at all and simply training models harder on the latest Nvidia GPUs is likely to close many of the remaining gaps.

sounds like typical naive technological progress is inevitable without major breakthroughs fallacy. just assume everything will Inevitability Get Better while ignoring the fact that e.g. self-driving cars have been stuck at the same "not quite good enough for prime time" plateau for years

Not really a fallacy when there is a clear path to further loss reductions simply by training on more data and making models larger. This is how the advances are occurring now.

https://gwern.net/scaling-hypothesis

Self driving is an AGI hard problem if you want the computer to be able to exercise judgement in unfamiliar situations. Generative world models trained on more data will likely fix these problems
