one thing that did stand out was the romanian border villages in ukraine. shitty shacks, terrible dirt roads, animals running around. yet every young woman dressed in immaculate heels and a cocktail dress when they left their house. striking.

also made me appreciate our usurious overlords a bit more. without a proper mortgage and credit system, you'd see empty skeletal houses everywhere. not falling down, but being assembled slowly year over year as the owner could finally accumulate a bit more money to afford a door, or a window, or some plywood to build a roof. hopefully just keeping ahead of the decay from the elements as it comes together. until one day it would finally progress enough that he could move in.

in e european shitholes, it seems people are used to seeing incredible wealth in the big cities. but in the smaller towns, not so much.

while gambling is in theory heavily restricted in most of these places, it isnt uncommon to see poker rooms that can operate openly enough to have a sign on the street.

so one night me any my friends go into one of these places and plop down $100 to buy in. which seemed like a casual amount to us, but was actually pretty big by the stakes of some cinderblock shithole poker room there.

the local language was russian, and we didnt speak a word. and we really werent picking up the vibe at all. we were just sitting there shooting the shit and half assed playing cards, against each other as much as anything.

eventually one of the other players who spoke a bit of english tipped us off that noone else there could understand our english chatter, were convinced we were colluding, and were quite pissed about it.

so we decide to call last hand and get out of there.

one of the locals bets, and my friend substantially raises. i have a 4-2 unsuited, but half to be a retard and half to just give my buddy my remaining stack i go all in. call from my buddy and the local.

my buddy ends with his pocket kings. the local triple ten... and i flush out with my 2 of spades on the river.

the local guy probably just lost a week or two of wages.

snaps and attacks me, yelling russian gibberish. the doorman, my friends, and the quasi english speaking guy pull him off of me.

now we aren't sure what the mood of the room as a whole is. but hey, not leaving money behind for that guy, so we cash and drive off to the next shithole as quick as we can.

not the best story, but was a hit at the time.
