At the point where over half of the meals Americans eat are outside the home, and you’re selling a lower price point, lesser materials product, your goal is to attract the highest volume consumers (and keep costs down as much as possible). This was also why the fast food companies started talking about their customers like they are addicts they want to keep hooked ie “heavy users” and 20% of fast foot customers started to account for 60+% of their total transactions.
In the 80s, back when their analytics were also super primitive, McDonald's still thought they were trying to get young families on a weekend night or a soccer team celebrating after the soccer game (see eg 80s McDonald commercials). By the 90s they realized that divorced/single/depressed losers were really their cash cows (pun intended). |
