You work really hard in the beginning, you build up a ton of good will. He made a shitload of money from Patreon and his "free" show was always a funnel to his paid show. He also sells a fuckload of concert tickets and sells out around the world. He made a fuckload of money and made a lot of money in real estate. At some point when you have millions in the bank your motivation does start to decline. Most creators retire at some point.
He diversified his business model and doesn't necessarily need money from his "free" show anymore. At some point you go how many homes in the Hamptons do I need? Despite all this his free weekly show is remarkably consistent even if he hasn't chased trends and tried to keep up with whatever the zoomers are watching. I'm sure that also his numbers are down because the further we get from the pandemic the more people go back to real life and less time is spent on the internet. ALL podcasts are down except Joe Rogan and a few other ultra popular ones. He doesn't need the exposure but he can still go on other people's podcasts like PBD, and Flagrant, and Theo Von and JRE and absolutely slay. Everyone treats him like a rock star because they know he's way funnier than them even if they sell more merch or whatever and get more Zoomer clicks because of their haircuts or whatever.
Every creator typically burns out and I'm sure if he's unmotivated it's because he's living in luxury and going to piss orgies in the Hamptons. But he's still the GOAT and can throw down any time. He just sold out Royal Albert Hall which I'm sure not many of his contemporaries can achieve. |

I recall jokes he did in person and then I saw the special and the delivery was worse in the special. It's inconsistent. There's just not as much money in releasing a special as there used to be so honing your craft super hard isn't worth it. If you're getting 300k a month on Patreon from a podcast and then you're getting a 10k check for putting out a special you're not going to go there.
Chappelle got 10s of millions for his specials from Netflix because he's black and was already super famous and tech libs love blacks. Also his newer specials aren't very good (nothing compared to his classic era). |
