On a scale of 1 out of 10, how difficult is that assuming Navy Seal graduation is a 10 and Air Force basic training is a 1.

Opposition to me is probably correlated with a genetic risk factor for suicide. Explains, e.g., ES tp's brother.

On the other hand, I've never had a suicidal/depressive tendency in my family.

The Scroll has more lay prestige, since you’re actually part of a high-speed unit, but the tab was always considered the harder one to get. 75th Ranger Regiment requires the tab once you become an NCO, so Ranger School was filled with Infantry butter bars and E4 regiment grunts. The lower enlisted were graded by a less harsh rubric, and were given lower level leadership roles, than NCOs and officers. Even with the easier grading, these guys (who had all passed RASP 1) still only had a ~30% graduation rate, which was consistent with the rest of the class.

What’s the kid’s rank and MOS?

If he is an infantry officer, I would say this is just expected; it’s prestigious, but it’s basically required if he wants his career to go anywhere. If he is enlisted, particularly if he isn’t in 75th Ranger Refiment, I would say it’s pretty prestigious and demonstrates considerable resilience and discipline on his part.

Sadly, most army (and I assume other branch) schools suffer from prestige decay as time goes on. The Army needs a gut-check school to differentiate the truly exceptional from the mediocre and below. Originally, it was Airborne school, but as Airborne School became a requirement and officers/NCOs were rewarded for putting Soldiers through it, it became a vacation school and lost its prestige. Ranger School was the successor to Airborne School, but it is suffering from the same illness. When I went through it, it was male only, with a certain level of experience required. I went to a Ranger School graduation a few years ago and they were graduating women and cadets, so I’m guessing the rigor has fallen off pretty significantly.

lol , nigga no.

When was Airborne school ever considered PRESTIGIOUS?

You spend 2 weeks learning how to jump from a perfectly working airplane 5 times and try not to roll your ankle when you land.

Ranger School is considerably more difficult than Airborne. Compare the number of Soldiers you see walking around with an Airborne tab vs. a Ranger tab.

Shit, getting your EIB is more difficult than Airborne.

I wasn't comparing prestige, I was comparing pipeline difficulty. AFSOC with dive school is probably the most physically grueling training in the military.

Furthermore, lay prestige favors the SEAL but almost every SOF dude would pick the CCT.

Colleague has a son in Ranger school at Ft. Benning/Moore. He's a newly commissioned infantry officer. My understanding is that he will have to stay in Ranger school until he qualifies. Already has his unit assignment etc. If he doesn't complete the requirements within 6-9 months, I think he'll be reassigned.

He won't have to stay if he fails (although there are an abundance of recycle points if he fails any single stage, which will prolong his experience there quite a lot). He'll go to his unit, but if he wants to progress his career, he'll need to go back and get a tab.

Ranger school has 3 phases (though the first phase is actually 2 phases): 1) Benning phase (which has RAP week and Patrols), 2: Mountain phase, and 3) Florida/Swamp phase.

Each phase is separately graded and you have to pass a phase to get to the next phase. You can recycle any phase (except RAP week) twice: once for failing leadership and once for failing peer evals. If you fail any phase for the same thing twice, you get either booted out of the course or given the chance to recycle to day 1.

If he fails the course, chances are he won’t be reassigned, but he will be second in line for a PL role if there is another guy there with a tab. Most infantry officers who don’t get a tab as a LT will go back as a captain around career course or switch to a new branch.
