Bought florida home in 2020. Never a claim in 10 years of homeownership. Premiums went from $2,800 to $6,000 in 3 years. 2023 insurer drops us due to new underwriting guidelines. Go to Citizens which is state captive insurer of last resort. Premium of $6,400.

Just got a letter that if citizens can find a private insurer for no greater than 20% premium increase they can take you out. Wouldn’t you know someone wants my policy at $7,670 which is a 19.9% increase and im on the hook for pro rata difference. Obvious citizens publishes their premiums and greedy insurance companies feast on the tasty policies with a guaranteed 19.9% premium increase.

No I would self insure and be covered on liability with an umbrella. My house is cbs construction on high ground with impact windows. I see no need for homeowners wrt to storms. If I had a fire guess id just eat the loss.

Does homeowners cover hurricane damage? If so, how far from the coast are you? I'd self insure only if I had an ICF house. That's insulated concrete forms. They're Styrofoam Legos that you fill with rebar and concrete

Apparently a huge chunk of this is the result of roofing companies engaging in a scam where they basically used existing law to force insurance companies to pay for replacement of hundreds of thousands of roofs that did not need to be replaced.

As you may have expected, it is all orchestrated by scamming shitlawyers.

It's the Florida version of what CSLG does (which, is causing many insurers to leave California, which will soon be in the same situation as Florida, but w/r/t car insurance)

No carriers are leaving California with respect to car insurance.

The state purpose of leaving is the utilities are claiming they can't operate in CA due to fire liability for not maintaining infrastructure in remote areas of california that are most susceptible to wild fire risk.

In reality its a scam where all the carriers banded together to leave in mass in order to extract concessions from the insurance commissioner at which point they will all come flooding back in.

CA is the largest economy in the US, all the carriers want to operate here.

This is how home insurance should / would operate if it were not for lender insurance requirements.

Instead, lenders require broad coverage with a low deductible to cover their ass.

The indirect consequences of this is must more far reaching than you'd expect.

Since the deductible is so low and the coverage is so broad, people end up using their home insurance for tons of shit that insurance shouldnt be used for according to the underlying principles of insurance (ie. insurance is "traditionally" intended to cover major, financially rouinous, risks).

Said another way, the low deductibles and broad coverage cause homeowners to use home insurance like a home warranty -- BIGLY driving up the cost for everyone.

It also facilitates things like the roof scam I referenced above.

I could go on, but you get the point.

They should've included some sort of Obamacare like provision where they have to cut you back a check if they don't pay out premiums.

Instead you know they're just going to s ay "well know Floridians are used to paying $7k a year so why would we lower it?"
