I don't live in Basking Ridge but i wouldn't call it a "far suburb". It's pretty convenient in that major highways go right through it and there are train stations that aren't super far if you do have to commute into the city which sucks regardless of where you're coming from.

I don't understand people paying a fortune to live further south or west in places like Bridgewater, Hillsborough, Montgomery, Flemington etc.

The crazy thing is that the payment on that $1.2MM house would be more than 2x what you are paying now because the interest rate has more than doubled. This means you could not remotely afford to replace what you currently have.
