A tourist was murdered and another wounded in a shooting this morning during a presumed ambush at the intersection of Roberto H. Todd and Manuel Fernández Juncos streets, in the Parada 18 area of Santurce.
According to preliminary reports, a disturbance was reported to 911 emergency services at 1:10 am, involving several gunshot injuries.
According to Puerto Rico's police service, the caller was working as an Uber driver and had been taking four men and four women in a gray 2022 Toyota Sienna to Roberto H. Todd street when an unidentified vehicle struck from behind near an intersection.
The driver stopped and exited the vehicle to check for damage when several masked and armed men exited from the other vehicle, and proceeded to beat him. He claims he was able to flee on foot and reach a police station.
The assailants managed to rob garments and money from some of the passengers. It was also revealed that the assailants fired toward the vehicle, striking two passengers. One of the women drove to the Pavía hospital in Santurce, where doctor Griselle Torres confirmed the death of a 27-year-old visitor.
Another 23-year-old passenger was shot in the arm, and - like the deceased - was also a resident of Florida.
Inspector Edwin Figueroa Maldonado, director of the Criminal Investigative Service (CIC) of San Juan, indicated that the identity of the deceased had been established by the Institute of Forensic Sciences (ICF), and had been in Puerto Rico for three days.
"A robbery report was accompanied by a report of a shooting with injuries, and these were determined to be part of the same incident. The investigation suggests that the victims left District (a strip club) and called an Uber. Afterwards, a report of a non-carjacking robbery was received, and these reports are currently being corroborated," according to detective Figueroa Maldonado.
As is procedure, security camera images from nearby businesses along the route are being investigated in order to confirm the witness testimony. Other witnesses are also being sought who may contribute to the inquiry.
Agent Erika Báez, assigned to the Homicide Division of San Juan, has taken charge of the investigation, along with prosecutor Melba López Ramos.
Other recent murder case involving tourists include that of 40-year-old Florida resident Nathan Joel Castro on December 30, 2025, in Old San Juan, and that of Omar Padilla Vélez, who was shot while traveling with his girlfriend on January 3rd through the Figueroa area of Santurce, as directed by a GPS system.
"The thing to recognize about these investigations is that the victims were not targeted on account of being tourists. All slayings are worrying, but we assure people that plans are being implemented to secure tourist areas," according to superintendent Joseph González Falcón during a press conference regarding a raid in Aguadilla.
For his part, Colonel José Rodríguez, assistant superintendent of Field Operations (SAOC), is coordinating security plans with his counterpart in San Juan.
