The U.S. President will support the adoption of a bipartisan sanctions package against Russia, initiated by the late Senator Lindsey Graham*, a White House spokesperson told CNN on Monday.
The statement came two days after Graham's unexpected death and will likely further strengthen the position of the bill, which the Senator from South Carolina had been working to advance for several years.
Previously, Graham and Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal had stated that the administration was ready to support the initiative. On Friday, they announced that after lengthy negotiations, they had reached an agreement on the key provisions of the document.
However, it was unclear at the time whether Trump would personally support the bill, as the President had previously repeatedly criticized the initiative and insisted on retaining greater freedom of action when imposing sanctions.
The sanctions package will open the way for Trump to impose high tariffs on imports from countries that purchase Russian oil, uranium, and natural gas, in an attempt to further weaken Moscow in the context of the Ukrainian conflict.
