btw I will help you out since ur not a stockmo
the rational counterargument to "we're in a bull run" is actually "there's a lot of market volatility right now and I prefer to invest in stable, anti-inflationary assets such as bonds." There are assets to acquire that can beat inflation but much less risky than the market. This is what investors with large sums of money are doing if they're worried about the volatility right now.
What makes Tommy's position so irrational is he's not even saying that the market is mispriced, turbulent, too risky, or what have you. He's actually saying it ought to be valued much lower than it is because "it can't go up forever" which is some really poor logic considering that historically over time the market does go up forever. The only rational use case for shorting the market is if you think stocks are specifically overpriced for a reason in the short term and are going to take a hit by a specific end date for some reason you can articulate, which he ostensibly cannot.
At any rate, being neutral or risk-adverse is the correct play if you are completely ignoring the signs that we're on a bull run, which, to be fair, I can't claim to know and no one knows. But there are some GLARING signs and to ignore them is almost to bury your head in the sand. But even if you are super risk averse, the correct action is not to literally short the market which is total madness. And then you drop in here to go hurr durr you're an idiot, gbtr. Ljl at you.
