So the type of people looking for a different experience just avoid it entirely. And the type of consumer who will watch slop all day is already there, so they just cater to those people. There's no economic incentive to make a masterpiece. The only people who can do it are people like Nolan who have the talent and cachet to do big spectacle well. But it's sort of only one flavor of what's possible. A lot of the great directors of yore who put art above all else would not be able to thrive in this economy. You couldn't make 2001 A Space Odyssey today because it just wouldn't make enough money to be viable. This is why all the indie stuff is ultra low budget and the actors admit they only make these for the fun of it. A lot of indie directors use their own money and are broke even when they make big hits. There's no incentive to make something great when you can make stuff that's profitable. In the 20th Century there were a lot more structures in place for studios to take big risks and reap big rewards. Now it's zero risk big rewards. Eg) ratings for an episode of a TV show, DVD sales. When all that matters is subscriber count and there are effectively only three true streaming platforms (Netflix, Prime Video, HBO Max or whatever they call it now) and a bunch of also rans, then the content itself is less relevant and it’s more about volume of shit. And a ton of garbage has been laundered onto these platforms that could never survive if individual ratings and view counts mattered. It’s a disaster for quality.
I am more and more thankful each day for the sheer volume of novels that exist that were published before ~2008. There is effectively endless quality content if you go the book route. Even movies and TV, there are so many older ones you can watch and enjoy.
Obviously this doesn’t fix the societal problems, but I’m not sure there is a fix save for nuclear bombs going off in the atmosphere and taking electronics offline. Lmao |
