Can work well for nuisance bots, scanners, brute force login attacks and all that. Wouldn't recommend it for sustained high volume ddos attacks though. That's what cloudflare gives you an advantage on because they have managed capacity. For a front line filter for bots on linux set up ufw or nft tables to block by IP, port, protocol etc. Then use nginx or haproxy for http-aware filtering.
