Can't seem to crack it. Anyone got any tips? Been through Lin and Gayle's books. Getting interviews but not getting offers.
Thanks.

Read Steve Blank The Four Steps to the Epiphany and just quote it...talk like that in the interview.
Also have some vapourware minimum viable product you're working on in the companies space that you can talk about.

This is a good point. I do come across as non-compelling. I don't resonate with my interviewers.
Fix for this is to do background research extensively? What should I be doing?
10-K (already do this)
quora?
What else?
Really appreciate your insights.

Hey man,
You’ve been giving me some solid advice. Any tips to practice/ make a connection with interviewers. I used to be good at connecting during engineering interviews but fail at business interviews. I can connect with people in a non interview setting in a casual setting. I also fail at connecting with women and apparently I make bad first impressions when there’s something at stake. Should I be more deprecating, etc? I think I’m charming but fail at people management - how do you give off the impression that you are a business people manager?
Thanks.

In terms of the interview, speaking with confidence really goes a long way in building a connection. Try to read the situation. If they're giving you more opportunity to control the conversation, start asking questions and if they start to open up, get more personal with your questions. Maybe go from questions about the position to their background. Try to inject humor, deprecation is always good if you can pull it off. Hide nerves as best as possible, you want to seem like you're in a pleasant mood/at ease with the situation.
In a more general sense, it really takes a lot of practice to figure this all out if you're not a natural. You really need to make social success your number one focus in life in order to make significant progress. Push yourself outside of your comfort zone. Analyze every interaction, what you did well and how it made the other person feel and vice versa. Rinse and repeat, find out what works. Also find a good psych doctor and experiment with using different med combinations in different situations

An interview is just sales, you're selling yourself. Are you selling yourself in the interviews?

Pick a different career track that doesn't stink of AIDs.
You've got an EE degree so you could be doing all sorts of more interesting technical jobs.

Most epic product failure:
I had to come up with an answer on the fly... so not sure if I fcuked this up. Talked about how we created the program for month and predicted revenue but it wasn't effective because there were a lot of cancellations. The story is not exactly coherent because extending the time frame is not that much of a challenge. On the issue of how to overcome this, chatted about how to look at the problem from all angles and sometimes not take the customers wants as bible and needed to sometimes challenge the customer... and how in the future i would float customer ideas across the entire team.. blah blah .. weak answer...
How would you work with a UX (Designer):
Rambled a bit and talked about user stories, user journer and how I did wireframes. Also mentioned that I sometimes work with the designer (because he's a contractor) - rambled here also on how I don't always involve him because of resource constraints, and involve him on major decisions... Weakest answer was the above...

1) you need to be specific for PM answers. you didnt really answer the question based on your answer above. your answer was bland and generic. did you atleast ask him what the data shows as drivers for cancellations? then you could build an answer from that based on your domain/product knowledge (which you should have if you are applying to that company)
the questions you ask in the interview are as important as your answers
2) UX is driven product's roadmap and strategy. the product is your baby. you are going to work collaboratively but UX must fit into the whole ecosystem of how product is going to be positioned in the market and you are going to drive the UX to achieve the goals of the product. Give some specific examples (make up shit that is BELIEVABLE if you have to)

Ok got some feedback:
"really liked you as well, but ultimately decided on a candidate that xxx felt more connected to. You have all the skillset YYY are looking for, which is what made it hard for xxx at the end. I will definitely keep you in mind."
What the f does the above mean and how can I connect more with interviewers?

For Why Y company?
I am interested in Y because:
1) I have the passion for the role as when I was younger, I did xyz which I hated and Y eliminates. It's something I connect to. Also I love tech and see that Y is at the forefront of z so it's exciting to be a part of a company that's forward thinking.
2) Impact: Y has 100k customers and solves the problem of A which is sometimes the critical factor of keeping SMB alive and the lifeblood of the economy. The ability to have impact on so many customers and the ability to have an impact on a critical factor of their business is powerful. Furthermore, I have PM experience in space B so I can add value. Also, I looked at some of your D features and have some ideas on making it better for the customer.
3) Growth: I want to be a part of a company/ industry that's growing. You guys are in space B which has a lot of inefficiencies and has a lot of opportunities for growth. Also, you're just covering only 1% of businesses which means we are still in the early stages of growth. When there's growth in industry/ company it means growth for me professionally and that's good for me.
Thoughts?

I once wrote out a whole interview for aspie guide. You are failing final round I interviews, which means you are failing on fit. To get to final round, you have already shown that you know the right stuff. Now you need to show that you are a nice, amicable and easy to get along with guy. Yes, you are aspie and yes, you can do this
1. Always be pleasant, polite and considerate to everyone. This includes the secretary, hr, anyone you interact with. Be considerate, positive and polite about everyone you talk about, people you worked and went to school with. This does not mean lie. This means place emphasis on the real positives of other people and your relationships. If there is one negative stand out and it makes you look good or helps bond with who you are talking to, you can mention ONE negative thing that should stand out from all your positives. Uou only get one.
2. Be an active listener and let the other person lead the conversation. This includes how you talk about your work experience. If they want substantive career details, they will ask. If they want to chit chat, follow their lead. Be I terested in THEM and ask questions about what they tell you. Not random, canned questions but questions that are specifically tailored to that person. And then listen to what they say and pay attention. Do NOT try to steer the conversation back to your work experience and how awesome you are unless they ask. Forget the business bs, you have that down. If you want a book, get one on active listening.
Again, the most improtant thing is listening and following the interviewers lead but you can aspie your way through it based on hints. Are they all work work work? If so spend more time talking about work but still listen to what they want to hear. Which part of your experience are they most interested in? What do THEY need help with in their job? It's not just about your resume, its about the other person and what they need.
If they talk more about personal stuff, kids, weather, commute and where you live, you follow THAT lead. Turn it back on them, ask for their advice on whatever they are talking about.
Be nice to everyone, LISTEN, and care about the person you are talking to and what they want from you. You will be fine even if aspie.

Just got a call from the company. They cancelled my interview that was scheduled for today. “We’ve already made an offer to someone else. We don’t want to waste your time. We have your info on file.”
Any way to use the cancellation for maximum leverage for future roles with the company?

I skimmed the thread so may have missed, but do you have a compelling story for why you want to do PM? (Other than failing OCI; perhaps a spin on failing OCI.)
For your (relatively senior) role, they're looking for someone who can lead and manage others, so that's what you need to convey, ideally through anecdotes of how you've successfully managed others in the past, maybe business school projects or previous professional or personal pursuits. If they ask questions about what you've enjoyed the most in your past jobs and what your biggest challenges were, tie your answers to leadership and organization.
Unlike entry-level jobs, which just look for someone eager and personable (i.e., connection), this is a leadership position that requires leadership skills and traits. You're applying to be the boss of other people, so act like it.

I agree. I tried really hard to control the narrative, but as Clinton mentioned above you have to go with the flow of the interview as well... I am out of sync and don't control.. it's a fine balance that I'm failing... I probably sound like junior varsity as well and not polished/ corporate/ weak leadership..
At this point I'm thinking there are multiple failure points. I would be happy to do live mock interviews with anyone who's willing to... robert.whitestown@gmail.com

They are encouraging me to leave the quest for PM.
One of them said I don't sound PMy enough when she did a mock interview with me.
I'm wondering if my age has anything to do it. I am an older MBA grad...

Anyone want to review my resume to see if I have any red flags? Although I don't think it's my resume since I make it all the way to the final round.
Thanks.

If I want a job in tech should I move to the bay area cold? Will physically being there help?
Thanks.
