Eh, it's not that bad.

You can pay almost that much for a 1920s-50s "boxslop" equivalent (2BR bungalow built for aircraft factory workers) in some parts of LA.

Those weren't mass produced in factories and still had some architectural value.

A lot were pretty much mass produced in areas of LA county like Lakewood, where they were completing 40-60 houses every day in the 1950s.

higher-grade materials, layouts catering to families (separate dining rooms, defined entryways, hardwood floors originally, bigger closets)

oh and they were at least built with recognizable styles - spanish colonial, early ranch, minimal traditional, with actual proportions, real eaves, divided light windows, etc and they were designed to create walkable streetscape not this toll brothers nonsense with no sidewalks and gay community centers if you're lucky in exchange for a 500 hoa

meh, I'll give you the styles.

A lot of these 1950s neighborhoods were also built without sidewalks, and the layouts aren't great for modern life (small "formal" living room in front that nobody actually uses, tiny bathrooms).

I don’t love them but I have a 1940s house with “character” that was built for factory workers and for actual livability with a family I’d trade it for the boxslop down the street with closets, storage, a foyer/mudroom, an attached garage, electrical that doesn’t flicker, etc.

Same block / nearly identical lots. Mine was added on to, garage conversion, etc. in 80s and early 00s. Sqft is fine for 4 of us. We’ve done some renovations and they’re so much nicer than the old parts that they make me wish the whole house was new. And there’s just stuff that we can’t change without going down to the studs (eg, small bedrooms, low ceilings, small bathrooms) and I don’t want to be out of the house for 18 months of my kids’ childhoods to do a reno, so I just bitch online.

sounds like your house just sucks. here the toll brothers properties are built on 6k sq ft lots and they stick massive 4.5k sq ft houses on them to maximize $/sq ft. the older properties on lots that size have reasonable houses on them (~2k sq ft)

Yeah, those lots are too small. Lots around me are 8-10k. Houses are generally single-story 1800-3000 sqft depending upon neighborhood. Can still have room between houses and a nice backyard if you’re thoughtful about layout. Lots of people have pools (ours was filled in before we moved in).

When people tear down they almost universally build 2-story gray boxes. 10 years ago they were all modern farmhouse style

Hard disagree but I'm in an early 1900s big house so maybe that's a different category. The modern farmhouse epidemic is shameful

That house likely in a different category. Many lawyers in coastal CA who have “made it” are living in 1940s-1960s suburban tract housing built for semiconductor or defense workers or the military.

Bring back kirbymo’s welcome to the upper middle class, motherfucker Redfin poasts from 5 years ago of $2.5-3M 3br/1ba Sunnyvale houses.
