People who think oil is returning to regular levels are like the people who thought the housing shock prices of Covid were temporary and would reverse once the hoax ended.

Nope, theyre never coming back. Enjoy 100+ oil for the rest of your life.

welcome to neoliberal feudalism, brother

but no, iran has nothing to do with longterm oil prices. the underlying dynamics are neo-malthusian -- too many people consuming too much non-renewable resources, and the world economies runs on oil -- but they need an excuse to point the finger away from themselves for creating this situation

Thats believable. On the spiritual level, misery needs to increase always so even the scapegoat/Malthusian reason is itself a scapegoat. Really, life needs to continue to increase in difficulty regardless of the specific reason for it.

Do you read Our Finite World? I may have suggested her blog to you before. Her thesis for years now is that there's just not enough of the oil used to make diesel fuel and jet fuel to go around.

I get the sense that car manufacturing is extremely oil-intensive for both energy needed and the recipes for plastics and fabrics- and the energy needed for those things.

do you really believe that producing a car uses anywhere near as much oil as the car being driven?

The oil used in manufacturing a single car is probably equivalent to the amount of fuel used in 2-3 years of driving, or something like that.

Enlighten me with your AI results though

sure, but the production of electric cars with rare earth elements seems to be more energy and resource intensive than manufacturing an ICE car, right? i admit i am too lazy to punch this into grok

Gasoline for passenger cars isn't really relevant in the bigger picture. Diesel and jet fuel is the key and the amount of available diesel per capital has basically been flat since the mid-to-late 2010s. Diesel is unbelievably essential to a productive economy. And with the per capita supply remaining relatively flat for years, it means there is less of the essential fuel needed for real economic growth.

Supply and demand. There is lots of oil outside of this region and higher prices will beget more production until prices renormalize above previous prices but not insanely so
