End scene. No geopolitics. No memory. No friction. Just vibes and yard signs. But Somalia is not an abstract victim-state. Mogadishu is not a metaphor. It is one of the most violent urban environments of the late 20th century, shaped by clan warfare, Islamist militancy, and great-power interference. The U.S. learned this the hard way in 1993, when images of American soldiers dragged through the streets burned themselves into the national psyche—and then were quietly forgotten by the very class that now speaks most confidently about “refugee justice.” That forgetting is the tell. White liberals in Minneapolis speak with total moral certainty about a place they could not locate on a map ten minutes before they learned the word “Islamophobia.” They celebrate diversity while knowing nothing about the internal politics of the societies they are importing into their cities.
