Gay Christology (often explored under the broader umbrellas of Queer Theology or Gay/Lesbian Theology) is an interpretive framework that seeks to understand Jesus, his life, and his teachings through the lens of LGBTQ+ experience. Rather than a single, universally accepted dogma, it is an intersectional and imaginative theological practice with a few major focal points.
Reclaiming the "Queer" Christ
Queer theologians—such as Marcella Althaus-Reid and Elizabeth Stuart—have argued that the historic Jesus Christ constantly subverted the rigid social, gender, and religious norms of his time. In this view, Jesus "queered" traditional boundaries by blurring lines between the divine and the human, the clean and the unclean, and traditional family structures (e.g., establishing a chosen family of disciples over biological lineage).
