The Police once raided a warehouse and found 3,800 PlayStations running FIFA
Ukraine's security service raided a warehouse in Vinnytsia expecting to find a crypto mining farm
Instead they found PS4 consoles stacked on racks from floor to ceiling
Every single one was running FIFA 21 on autopilot, farming Ultimate Team coins 24 hours a day to sell on the black market
The operation was stealing $259,000 a month in electricity and causing power blackouts across the entire city
The consoles alone were worth $1.5 million
EA makes $1.6 billion a year from Ultimate Team
The FIFA coin black market is worth over $200 million a year
At black market rates, 3,800 consoles farming coins 24/7 could pull in $3 to $5 million a year

i guess the fromsoft/soulsborne games are interesting, even if not to everyone's taste. they basically took the castlevania: symphony of the night aesthetic and successfully expanded it into 3D. even people who hate stuff like bloodborne don't usually consider it a 'bad' game in terms of how it looks or functions.
cyberpunk 2077 also looks pretty good after the initial glitched launch.

When do you think the bigger shift came? Do you think it was in the 2000s when always online multiplayer became normal, then digital storefronts, persistent accounts, voice chat, achievements, DLC etc? Or do you think it came in the 2010s with streaming, creator culture, discord servers, battle passes and identity-heavy fandom? I think In the early 2000s-2010 it was starting to become identity-adjacent but wasn't too bad yet. But by the time streaming and seasonal events came around it was a complete immersive alternate reality with no chance of escape

The shift was probably the release of Deus Ex (2000) the first instance of predictive programming in gaming, and the start of social engineering through it
I was the OP:
