I’m sure it will crack dark matter, quantum gravity, and the origin of life, too, but the moment it explains what consciousness it, how it works, how to recreate it in a lab, how to test for it, etc, it’s going to a have a profound effect on society and many religiousmos will have mental breakdowns
You’ll still have some holdouts just like you still have flat earthmos and evolution deniers, but once the evidence becomes too convincing for most people to deny, we’ll see lots of cons jumping out of windows and throwing themselves into traffic

i don't think "consciousness" is all that important. i used to think it was, but after getting smarter and more knowledgeable i don't think that anymore. in my experience other smart and knowledgeable people don't either
we still find it interesting because we're curious and because it's natural to want to know exactly what one is, but i don't think that understanding the full mechanics of consciousness will be a consequential development for humans. nothing will change after we figure it out. understanding its mechanics won't help us make artificial intelligence any more capable, either

"recreating consciousness" would not just be a big thing AI does in our lifetime, it would be a universe-altering, biggest achievement of mankind type of thing
some chips and wires that are conscious? youve birthed a soul that is not human, with your own labor. bigger, daresay, than aliens landing. certainly bigger than propelling humans onto the moon or some other planet. That's just extrapolating walking across town.
creating someone conscious (I dont think you can write 'something' anymore) that is not through the sexual reproduction of humans is completely outside the parameters of the game and breaks every philosophy, every religion, every politics, everything

seems deliberately obtuse
not only by definition, but self-evidently, as long as man has existed he has remarked upon his own consciousness as some kind of "animation" or "ensoulment" or "psyche". There is hardly a human culture, and certainly no civilized culture, which fails to note and even sanctify the uniqueness of this human characteristic.
Whatever you want "god" or "godliness" or "divinity" to mean, humans have always understood their consciousness / soul to be a shared spark of something otherworldy, something divine.
The reason materialist atheism fails so spectacularly is it has absolutely no satisfying way to account either for this concept, or for this cultural phenomenon. Materialists must only say, "yeah every other age of man, and all the geniuses therein, were just magical-thinking tards, haha. The men who composed the epics, who built the cathedrals, who wrote the symphonies, et al, were really fucking dumb, but Im here to tell them we are all meat."
Same materialists now argue "when alexa fetches a celeb's DOB for me, she's kinda conscious if you actually consider it"

we already have this understanding and it makes no difference and never will.
https://mitpress.mit.edu/9780262633086/being-no-one/
even if you could dilute the concept down to something that idiots could understand they would just be like "ok guess i'm a gene-copying biorobot, you best believe I'm going to live up to it champ. the survival of our species is of paramount importance for some reason."
even now we have people decrying nihilism while advocating nihilistic worldviews - "life has the meaning you give to it". people don't even realize that they are nihilists and will attack you for being one haha. it's a total disaster.
