Manufacturers in the U.S. are cutting thousands of jobs even as President Trump pushes economic policies that he says will revitalize the industry.

Employers shed 12,000 manufacturing jobs in August, while payrolls in the sector have shrunk by 42,000 since April, according to a new analysis from the Center for American Progress (CAP) that draws on government labor data.

Through October, employers have announced 1.1 million job cuts, a 65% year-over-year increase from the 665,000 that were cut through October last year.

Inflation has picked up since President Donald Trump announced new import tariffs in April, with the latest consumer price index data showing outsized increases in tariff-sensitive categories, including coffee, toys and televisions.

Overall prices rose 2.9% in August from a year earlier, up from 2.7% in June and July, according to CPI data released Thursday. The CPI measures the cost of a broad basket of everyday goods and services, including groceries, rent and medical care.

2025 was the worst year for hiring since 2020, December jobs report shows

The U.S. added 50,000 jobs last month, a mixed report capping off a difficult year for the labor market.

Just 584,000 jobs were created in 2025, far below the more than 2 million added in each of the prior two years, and the more than 4 million hires in 2022, the height of the post-pandemic recovery.

Last year, the labor market added jobs at an average pace of 48,000 jobs per month, after revisions.

WASHINGTON, Jan 9 (Reuters) - U.S. manufacturing jobs in December continued an eight-month skid that began last spring after President Donald Trump rolled out aggressive import taxes that he pledged would lead to a resurgence of blue-collar jobs by reshuffling world trade to favor U.S. workers.
