Car dealerships are like mafia operations, especially in post-industrial Scumbag lands. It’s weird they don’t receive more scrutiny.

Just saying they don’t at all have a moral high ground. I didn’t even mention the nepotism and good ol’ boys network. It’s basically the same shit as GC but at a much smaller and ignominious scale. Btw you are engaging in Whataboutism and I won’t stand for it.

its not whataboutism champ, criticism should consider potential alternatives. yeah, all business is scummy with nepotism and shit. still, id rather the local autosale franchise baron get that wealth than a bunch of people in tel aviv.

It's a classic case of public choice theory. Consumers would love to just skip the bullshit and buy direct from the manufacturer. Manufacturers would love to skip the bullshit and sell direct to the consumer. The only players who like the car dealership model are the parasites who own car dealerships, but because they care a LOT more than anybody else, it persists. Carmax/Carvana/etc. aside, it's actually remarkable how resistant these worthless entities have been to disruption.

yea i'm sure auto companies would pass the savings directly to the consumers if the middle was eliminated and definitely not just pocket it for themselves.

They would compete with each other on price. This happens all the time and is why you can buy a decent poasting computer for $150 these days. If there were "computer dealerships" then a 486 would still cost $2,500 and they would upsell you on a service plan.

computers have no value any more which is why they cost nothing. TVs also cost like $62 to make so they can sell them for $400 and make money. ppl actually need and use cars. auto companies know this and aren't going to sell someone a car for $30K when they're willing to pay $40K

So if we take out the middleman, auto companies aren't going to do the thing that they're currently doing?

have you ever looked into the legal wizardry employed to justify allowing new automakers like tesla to sell direct but not legacy ones? its all fraud and lies.

Dealers are full of scum, for sure, but they also operate a very low margin business that plays a necessary role in the car market. The low margin nature of the business is in part why it is full of scum.

Going direct to consumer would either involve making all cars to order (not actually reasonable outside of elite luxury brands, and even then it's not really workable) or having automakers operate dealerships themselves to move inventory. Why would Toyota or BMW want to get directly involved with the dealer market? Do they really want to start holding onto trade-ins from other brands? It's just not a core competency and the dealer business is difficult and low margin, hence why it is full of scumbags to begin with.

What's more, I think most people's beef with dealerships is the service department. Unless you're in warranty, they will try and fuck you in the ass for shit you don't actually need. But there's also no need to take your car to the dealer for maintenance. Plenty of independent shops that cost a fraction of the dealer's service department (even if they also try and fuck you in their own way.)

but they *do* want to get into the market. they've lobbied forever to eliminate laws mandating dealerships. that has ramped up significantly as exceptions have been made to permit tesla to sell directly to consumers.

I know that Ford was pushing to do this on the EV side. But how much of this was predicated on going full EV (and therefore having less maintenance to provide)?

Maybe I'm offbase, but running dealerships seems like a huge headache. Is it really so attractive to automakers when the market is shit (as it is now.)

nah ding. im a bit of MFE on this since i did some work involving these laws and lobbying. legacy automakers campaigned HARD against the exceptions. and theyre right, it is unfair.

as you said, autosales in a low margin business. cutting out a huge middleman is very significant when ever dollar counts. there is a reason why tesla, rivian, etc are all direct.
