"auto companies know this and aren't going to sell someone a car for $30K when they're willing to pay $40K"
"I am aware $30K cars exist. $40K cars also exist. you seem foreign."
So if we take out the middleman, auto companies aren't going to do the thing that they're currently doing?

Dealers are full of scum, for sure, but they also operate a very low margin business that plays a necessary role in the car market. The low margin nature of the business is in part why it is full of scum.
Going direct to consumer would either involve making all cars to order (not actually reasonable outside of elite luxury brands, and even then it's not really workable) or having automakers operate dealerships themselves to move inventory. Why would Toyota or BMW want to get directly involved with the dealer market? Do they really want to start holding onto trade-ins from other brands? It's just not a core competency and the dealer business is difficult and low margin, hence why it is full of scumbags to begin with.
What's more, I think most people's beef with dealerships is the service department. Unless you're in warranty, they will try and fuck you in the ass for shit you don't actually need. But there's also no need to take your car to the dealer for maintenance. Plenty of independent shops that cost a fraction of the dealer's service department (even if they also try and fuck you in their own way.)
