That way your only memories of the movie will be the fight in the dark skyscraper silhouetted against the night skyline, the sweet aesthetics of the Macau scenes, Javier Bardem's kooky gay angry villain, etc.

Casino Royale -> Quantum of Solace -> Skyfall is the best 8-hour block of any modern movie franchise

People mocked the Home Alone aspect which has been done to death, even after Skyfall (Looper, Logan, Avengers, Purge). But the bigger reason that act 3 fails is because it ties the narrative back to Daniel Craig's family history, making it too personal (and making the Bond character uncomfortably vulnerable/sympathetic for a brutal assassin).

Also Judie Dench's death scene was horribly written, overly telegraphed and unaffecting for such an established character.

Am I correct that Bond went against protocol, took M to his childhood home where she was killed, and suffered no repercussions for that?

I know we don't care too much about realism in these movies, but still, if you go rogue and get the boss killed, you should probably be done here.

I don't love Bardem's death scene though

This is true for every single "comedy". God it gets cringey when they try to wrap up some slapstick crap story
