The logic would go like this: cultural heritage of their need to continually atone for the guilt and sins is now transferred "the current thing"
The conformity to "the group thing" is also there.

i read a Saul Bellow novel (Mr. Sammler's Planet) last month, and he basically made this exact argument in the book.
the main character is bemoaning the degeneracy in 1970s NYC and blames the American 'ruling class' (the WASPs) for letting everything go to pot, abandoning their duties to be stern and impose order.
but Jews will often argue contradictory things in the same breath, as required. it's just a game to them.
