All of Amazon's most vital services rely on US East 1 at some point, and that's by design. Amazon doesn't like distributed networks because there are too many points of failure and too many security risks. They will always be builders of Very Big Data Centers, and US East 1 is like a hardened military facility. Look where they built it.
Obviously the tradeoff is that any failure at US East 1 fucks all of Amazon's core services in some way, but Amazon got on top of the problem right away and brought US East 1 back up within a day.
