People were happy in the 1990s. Now they’re not. What year did it switch?

I think I noticed a lot of people starting to complain around 2015 but I don’t remember the exact timeline and I’d like to get the bort’s thoughts

 Well, 9/11 and Obama 2
Would be the obvious choices here but yet
  "Sopranos" back in '98 contained
The same theme of American decay

Obama 2 there was no "HOPE" around
Campaigning, and we still were in Iraq.
The social pressure ramped up then as well.

 This is the obvious answer.

Screens / social media has had the biggest effect on our happiness ever.

WFH is a great example of this. Almost everyone prefers WFH, but it's also pretty clearly awful for your mental health.

It's easier t owatch something on Netflix than to go to the movie theater. It's better to get food delivered to your porch and eat it on your couch that to go to a restaurant. Everyone prefers to text their friends than call them. You meet people on dating apps instead of going out to bars.

All these little improvements in our life have made us miserable.

 Is this a serious Q?

Everyone posts fake pictures of themselves having fun and then looks at everyone else's pictures and wonders why their own lives aren't like this.

What you're describing is happening to you is happening to everyone.

I didn't realize they let fucking retards sign up for this site. WFH is amazing. I did it so many years before retiring, and I'd wake up late, work from bed, go to a cafe, chat people up there while casually working, if i had a meeting i'd head back home to call, but basically i was just chilling, playing with my kids, fucking my wife, never having to drive a car, working out in the middle of the day, and going to bed early and getting 8+ hours of sleep every night.

 how has nobody said 2008

during the 9/11 aftermath and iraq it was all just disappointment and an almost quaint mocking frustration with american leadership as a pastime, mostly about things that were a distant reality for 95% of the population.

2008 was the first time we saw real anger. and we never turned back. if we had a republican president libs would have gotten violent. obama being president kept them merely demoralized.

Tipping point IMO was around 2014 or 2015 when the smartphone reached mass proliferation. It's not the 24/7 social media feed so much as the fact that the smartphone removed all of the so-called "friction" from life.

But what tech frauds call "friction" is actually the texture of life.

You see ads for products or services that promise to "take care of X so you can go back to doing what you love." But now there is a smartphone-based service for everything that used to just be part of living a normal life. And all that people seem to love doing is endlessly scrolling. But not because they actually love it, rather it's because the smartphone has removed so much of actual life from the world. And what remains is but a husk.

It doesn't mean a person can't be happy, but it requires a meaningfully concerted effort to replicate a more analogue life.

I think 2017ish or so was the point of no return when the entirety of women’s collective unconscious was fully blown out by Tinder and IG. Women have always been capable of nastiness etc etc but there was so many good traits balancing out the other end. Your average person today just has so few redeeming qualities and their high powered perceptions are laser focused on the faults & inadequacies in others.

It’s obvious evil is in full control of this realm and automation will not be done kindly, but needfully. haha

There was a bunch of shit percolating for a while, but Covid & BLM riots was the end point.

Also, a great argument could be made for the year they started passing out smartphones.

 this is easy
1/2 became miserable at the end of 2016 when trump won
the other 1/2 became miserable at the end of 2020 when biden won
now each half hates the other
the libs are the ones to blame, but that's a different conversation

 its the phones.

hard to say exactly 07-12 when they became ubiquitous, and of course "phones" can be kids on tablets or employment on desktops. so theres nuance, sure, but within a handful of years mankind converted its existence to virtual

been long enough since the matrix movie that its kind of goofy and stale to still talk about, but we really did that shit, we really chose a matrix existence - and only since most of us were in law school

but its as remarkable, and more sudden, than almost any other development in our species - so there is no understating it. ITS THE PHONES

-Shitlib 'privilege' rhetoric etc. going mainstream

as others have mentioned, proliferation of cell phones around 2014 started a downward spiral for individual, internalized misery

but i think it was around 2020 when people looked up and got a peek behind the curtain and realized it was fraud and lies all the way down. american institutions were hollow, our leaders were utterly corrupt and incompetent, and the nefarious ((actors)) we had thought might possibly be in charge were far more powerful, and far more evil, than we ever realized. we were lied to constantly for decades. it's hard to accept that American brainwashing was just as cunning and heavy-handed as the regimes we were taught to despise for doing the same.
