The juxtapositions are Striking imho

Led Zeppelin vs. the Rolling Stones

Zeppelin has forty songs normal people recognize within ten seconds. The Stones have six songs, a tongue logo, and a 60-year press release.

Queen vs. The Who

Queen has an obscene number of songs embedded in public life. Sports songs, movie songs, karaoke songs, wedding songs, funeral songs. The Who has “Baba O’Riley,” “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” and fifty years of being described as explosive.

Fleetwood Mac vs. Jefferson Airplane

Fleetwood Mac made songs. Jefferson Airplane made a photograph of the 1960s.

Creedence Clearwater Revival vs. Grateful Dead

CCR existed for about five minutes and left behind twenty indestructible songs. The Grateful Dead toured for thirty years and left behind a parking-lot civilization.

Steely Dan vs. Frank Zappa

Steely Dan has a dozen songs that quietly colonized grocery stores, bars, cars, offices, and divorced-dad consciousness. Zappa has 700 albums and nobody can hum one without first explaining why you are too stupid to understand it.

it's embraced by prominent jam bands who routinely cover his music (e.g. phish covering peaches en regalia and disco biscuits doing pygmy twilight). This has exposed a lot of the jam band bros to zappa who latch onto his stuff as weird, somewhat obscure and intellectual.

Phish concerts were some of the most tedious experiences of my life. they play a 2 minute song and then just do repetitive boring shit for 30+ minutes and you feel like a weirdo because everyone else is pretending to be super into it and you're just standing there waiting for them to end it already.

the stones' run from beggars banquet to exile (and maybe goats head soup) is absolutely perfect. if it werent for satanic majesties being bleh, you could say their perfect album run goes from aftermath to goats head soup.

sticky fingers and exile are absolutely flawless.

zeppelin is fine, and i acknowledge how influential they are but they just don't grab me like that.

you boners are autistically missing the entire point. he is not saying the stones suck. he is saying that LZ has more notable and instantly recognizable songs that live on in pop culture. the claim is a little exaggerated in that the stones have probably ten songs everyone recognizes and LZ has maybe 20.

LZ also probably had a bigger impact on the direction of rock music and alternative music for sure. the stones can claim 3-4 of the most famous 'licks' in all of rock which is also very impressive.

i used to think this but would "alternative music" even exist without raw power? the stones were a huge influence for james williamson.

cant imagine there would be punk, post-punk and all the stuff following in that vein without that album and iggy pop's other 70s work after it. iggy didnt like zeppelin at all

The point is that some bands have a lot of recognizable songs compared to others. It’s not a judgment of Betterness itt

I'd wager that most people who weren't alive in the 60's could name more stones songs than beatles songs if I'm being honest, you could probably do an album with stones songs that are famous from movies alone

go ask a zoomer to name beatles songs and I'd bet they run out after 4, I never said the beatles don't sell but their greatest attribute was making every song poppy and melodic enough to be good but only a handful really stick out long term

also zoomers are a horrible metric - most of them have never heard of Keanu Reaves or Cameron Diaz. You'd be surprised what Zoomers have heard of (virtually nothing) but they know about Charli Damelio and shit

What's impressive about The Beatles is that not only do they have billions of streams in the 2020s but they've been big in every decade since the 60s. They sold hundreds of millions of physical pieces of plastic with their music on it and it has never stopped. The idea that future generations are still going to click on some shitstreamer from 2026 in 60 years is laughable. There will be some new dumb gay streaming kids and tiktoker types of the future by that point. And at that point in 2086, The Beatles will still be around. Even if they go down a little bit in global popularity they will still be streamed all the time. They will out last you all. All of you and everything you like will be gone in 60 years but The Beatles and Mozart will still be huge.

I didn't argue that, but that doesn't add up to having recognizable songs, a big part is that the titles mostly suck ass but the net result is people forget the songs, every single person you meet will respond "yes" if you ask if they know mozart but then fail to name a single song

There is some kind of unspoken cultural divide here. Literally every white person I know who grew up in ordinary America and was born between 1965 and maybe 1990 is very familiar with LZ. They are one of those bands where everyone's siblings or friends somehow had a few CDs around that you inherited of got into as a gateway to the band. LZ is good enough that people would pursue it on their own, not just hear it casually. They have at least a half dozen songs that almost anyone's mom would recognize .

The RS worship in here is coming from oddballs or non-whites . Zurich for instance is deranged weirdo who grew up worshipping DC hardcore, some of the worst music and the worst 'scene' ever, ruled by awful straight edge socially maladroit loners who lived to prey on younger kids and break their hands punching brick walls alone in alley to 'prove' something. The lack of recognition of the simple melodic achievement and innovative arrangements and precursor to so much more music that LZ pulled off in a short span of time is absurd. They must have just had no contact with it growing up, which again correlates with an unusual and probably lonely youth experience.

LZ generated more classic and well known songs in ten years than RS have in 60 years. and while LZ had their clear influences, it's inarguable that the RS directly ripped off and aped far more than LZ. Worshipping the Stones as the epitome of cool is just laughable too, sort of like idealizing owning a shitty Harley.

Who are the modern equivalents -

More hits than you'd think: Blink 182, RHCP, Green Day, Fallout Boy, Weezer, Maroon 5 (huge example of this if they count), Creed, Nickelback, Matchbox 20

Less hits than you'd think: Foo Fighters, Radiohead, Pearl Jam, The Strokes, Arcade Fire, The Black Keys, Metallica

Medium: The Killers, Panic At the Disco, My Chemical Romance

DMB is literally the opposite of this. They had like 6 albums where nearly every song was recognizable to their fans. that's why gen x dorks still pay $$ to go to their shows.

Metallica wrote One Song per record that really stands out. Each album has One Song that's staggeringly good. And then the rest is filler. But that One Song is so good people want to hear it a hundred times.

Your mileage may very but here is the list - I think they had their early hits from like 2005-2007 and then every 5 years they had songs like Centuries which were played to death in like the intros to sporting events. I'm not sure anyone actively listened to them but they were played on TV 10,000 times. Similarly the Immortals song is always on Disney Radio and they sing the theme song to Spidey and the Amazing Friends so anyone with a son has heard that 5,000 times.

"Sugar, We're Goin Down" (From Under the Cork Tree - 2005)

"Dance, Dance" (From Under the Cork Tree - 2005)

"Thnks fr th Mmrs" (Infinity on High - 2007)

"My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light Em Up)" (Save Rock and Roll - 2013)

"Centuries" (American Beauty/American Psycho - 2015)

"Uma Thurman" (American Beauty/American Psycho - 2015)

"Immortals" (Big Hero 6 Soundtrack/American Beauty/American Psycho - 2014)

----

Here is the update

Centuries was theme for the first College Football Playoffs on ESPN

Uma Thurman was also used for CFP

Light Em Up was in all sports but in particular the MLB Playoff theme

It's weird how they became such a corporate entity. They had a natural organic fanbase after From Under the Cork Tree with a lot of crossover with MCR and P!atD as leading mall emoers.

And then I think something shifted where they got to a point where they were like OK we have this rare and unique talent in life, how do we use it to make as much money as possible. I know, we'll make songs targeting large corporations.

There's some people who are gifted and they just have no interest in expressing themselves creatively. They viewed their art as just a vehicle to print money so they could do other things. They never had any presence in rock culture after their early years. Just how many properties can I buy with my gift in life. They took being soulless to a new level.

Edit: holy shit Pat Stump took the bug pill.

radiohead was never radio music

You don't like them? That is fine. But that statement and their being greatly overrated is wrong.

Although it is a shitty occupation any rock critic from the Stones era that is worth a damn (Christgau, Marsh, Marcus, Bangs) rates them highly -- higher than LZ, who I happen to also really like.

your music takes are utterly retarded much of the time. and you try to act like some music snob while your knowledge of music is like a puddle - kind of wide, but very shallow. it's kind of adorable to watch you act like a 2000 era pitchfork reader. you didn't even know who the fall were, for starters. come on man. you also said trans europe express by kraftwerk was mid. lmao.

I will physically fly to your location and sit down with you and you can play me every Stones record you want and I will sit there and writhe in pain, roll on the ground, and complain the entire time. Jane's Addiction had ONE SONG and the rest was Perry Farrell being a loon and Dave Navarro being really hot.

Muse has a lot of incredible songs no one is familiar with and then some really famous ones that were produced by hip-hop producers.

Alice in Chains is a band with a weird cult following. They were musically unique but I think a little overrated. Not as majestic as everyone says.

not reading thread, but stones song off top of my head

satisfaction

cant always get what you want

sympathy for the devil

under my thumb

paint it black

jumping jack flash

ruby tuesday

start me up

beast of burden

brown sugar

... thats ten without pausing typing that are instantly recognizable. i may have missed another 10 obvious ones

Then you can get into Tier 2 songs like the disco one "I miss you" (?), the "She's so cold" one, "waiting on a friend" and others that dominated radio and are basically ubiquitous

By song 35+ I grant you, one starts to need to be a fan to know the song.

but lol

What's crazy is that compared to real Zeppelin fans I'm not even in the 70th percentile. Real Zep heads know everything about everything. I'll admit I've never listened to Coda okay. but everything from LZI-Physical Graffiti is like ultra canonical in rock history. But any Tier 1 Zep head would demolish me in knowledge tbh.

all of your music opinions are basically your subjective viewpoint passed off as objective fact. you do this in every single music thread.

you can't really argue with a straight face that LZ has more recognizable songs than the stones. many people ITT have said that, and it's absolutely true. LZ has stairway, rock n roll, maybe 1-2 more that your average person (who says "i like everything" when you ask what music they're into) would know. but that same person would know satisfaction, under my thumb, gimme shelter, beast of burden, wild horses, paint it black, angie, start me up, sympathy for the devil, you can't always get what you want, jumpin jack flash, and probably a few others. they'd know these songs just from movie soundtracks alone.

your average shithead on the street would probably even know a couple deep cuts just from watching scorcese movies (like can't you hear me knockin, mentioned elsewhere in this thread).

the LZ songs named ITT as being ubiquitous are mostly laughable. people do not know those songs, period.

your response: "but i don't really know any stones songs and i know 30 LZ songs." explain how this is relevant to the thread.

The average person probably thinks Blank Space and I Knew U Were Trouble were written by Beethoven. I mean at some point we're trying to guestimate what regular people think? I have no idea what regular people think. The Rolling Stones are obviously really famous but Led Zeppelin is super famous too. Stairway and Freebird are the most played songs on classic rock stations. I don't know what other people think. I know the Stones are famous but I don't really fuck with them. Their songs are so boring my brain filters them out. I can only guess at what other people think. If you meet a Zeppelin fan they know all the songs. There's plenty of people who don't know any Rolling Stones songs and only listen to EDM or rap. It's hard to even argue that one monoculture exists. It's generational too. Different gens remember different shit. My dad is super old and he loves the Stones. I don't. He also knows loads of Zeppelin songs. His favorite band is Mountain. In three generations it's possible no one alive will even remember rock existed. We can only speculate. I acknowledge that the Stones are really famous but they're also extremely boring. I hope they die out of the culture soon.

They didn’t fit into the Classic Rock genre which was mostly hard rock. They didn’t fit on the Oldies station either, back then that was more like doo wop, Motown, girl groups. They were definitely “underplayed” on radio relative to their fame, influence, sales, etc.

I think it was just their way of shrewdly avoiding overexposure. I don’t think they’d be as well regarded if it were possible to hear them without Buying their shit and being in a position of feeling like you needed to justify spending $10-20 in 1970 or 1980 or 1990 for One Album. Whereas you hear Aerosmith 5000k times on the radio and are like “STFU.” And every white guy knows every Zeppelin song. It cheapens it in a way.

Yeah and that’s especially true of the later arty stuff. If you wanted to hear Dear Prudence or Golden Slumbers it was basically impossible until the Internet unless you shelled out the money to buy the albums. And you had to know which of their albums to get. Somehow the biggest rock band ever had this weird exclusivity about them as opposed to say Foreigner, where you could just turn on the radio to hear “Hot Blooded.”

Yeah they should just play to their Scummy audience. Why does the song “Blue Collar Man” even exist? I always assumed these bands moved Downmarket once the music aged and it became Scumbags listening to the Same Songs over and over. Like Dream On circa 1973 seems like less of a Joke than Aerosmith became imo. Kinda like Facebook, starting with the Elite and moving down. Qfora did this too. But anyway Styx was going for Scumbags right out of the gate. Good for them. But imho prole drift made fools out of a lot of “serious” artists.

pretty good one. another overly technical nerdbro band, seems to be the trend here. tom sawyer is huge of course. i grew up hearing a ton of them on the local hard rock radio station, not sure how well known they are outside of those circles but i suspect not at all.

sonic youth is 180 but only because they're influential and because of their general aesthetic/ethos. if you're talking songs people would want to listen to, they have maybe 1-2 albums' worth in their catalogue. imo, anyway.

Dino is stylistically one of my favorite bands while simultaneously being some of the worst songwriters ever. I think it's really fun how they introduced heavy metal guitars into otherwise laid back college rock type music. You're just kind of mildly trucking along and then Dino launches into heavy fuzzed out metal riffs, and then back to gay indie singing. I love the concept but the execution is trash. I don't think J gave a flying fuck about success. He's been married to the same woman (no kids) and lived in the same house his entire life. I think he just smokes weed and plays video games. Fewest fucks given.

The Fugees and Janes have a handful of instantly recognizable radio songs which is par for many famous bands that only really released music in their prime for 7-8 years.

frank ocean is MFCR. i like his music fine but he is in the running for most overrated artist of his era.

reconsider on depeche mode. they have several big hits and a few broadly recognizable songs beyond those. among fans of this kind of music their songs are very well known and they were more or less a glorified singles band similar to new order. they have like ten songs that are in regular radio rotation.
