its actually shocking how badly actresses turn out. theyre totally fine until like 40 which is way more time than normal men/women get and then ljl. the woman who played marcy in married with children was actually very attractive albeit with a dyke haircut and turned out the same way.

This thread sucks because (as is typical for xo) it misses the forest for some stupid trees. The film is a classic because of Patrick Swayze period. He owned the role and was the most underrated actor of our time. If you discuss the movie without mentioning his contribution first and foremost then you suck imo

keanue was weirdly good too but you are right, without swayze's well tuned performance and antihero charisma, it doesn't work as well.

other poasters are also correct that this is an off-label james cameron movie so of course it's good. cameron's fingerprints on the really well shot action scenes are obvious. combining the cop moving tropes with the surfing and other 'extreme sprots' type action was a good capture of the cultural zeitgeist of the time. it has aged really well and is like a cultural document of the early 90s.

James Cameron was executive producer and was married to Bigelow during production. Iirc Cameron claimed last year that he wrote Point Break and had been stiffed by the Writers Guild. Iliff acknowledged that Cameron and Bigelow created the production draft and that Cameron added major material, including Utah jumping from the plane without a parachute. The WGA nevertheless awarded Iliff sole screenplay credit.

Cameron and Bigelow performed surgery on Iliff’s production draft from Rick King’s story concept.

Bigelow “directed” it in the way that Women direct things.

Patrick Swayze supplied the soul. Keanu supplied whatever Keanu supplies. Then lightning struck and the thing got up and surfed. That is what I mean. Imho the Film’s escalating action structure is Cameronian af.

Film has many of these disputed creatures, e.g. Poltergeist is credited to Tobe Hooper, but Steven Spielberg originated the story, co-wrote and produced it, and was extremely active during filming iirc. Cast recollections and production accounts have kept the “ghost director” question alive for more than 40 years.

Percy Shelley, btw, demonstrably edited Mary’s manuscript and contributed language. There’s hard liberal arts evidence he wrote like 5-10% of it anyway. But don’t get Mary Shelley mixed up with Harper Lee who probably couldn’t even spell “mockingbird” imho.

This is an aha moment for me. Thank you for sharing. She directed this like Courtney Love wrote the early (good) Hole songs.
