If you're serious then you should take a look at the stats. The median income for a working age person (18-65) is 26k, according to US tax returns. Of course some people earn unreported income (waiters etc) but I'm doubtful the true number is above 30k or so. The median income household (includes households with more than one earner) is about 49k. A household earning 110k is easily in the top 10%. I think 1% starts at about 350k or so.

I don't necessarily disagree with you. The American wage structure is one of compression for the vast majority of people with a giant chasm to the 1 percent and another giant chasm to the .1%. This is why OWS, despite their general cluelessness, is correct in saying that the 99% (which includes a biglaw associate) have a lot more in common than they sometimes care to admit.

If you say so. Fact is, a person making 100k in MFH has a lower standard of living that people making much less in other places. Plus, a 100k salary in MFH is likely not transferable to some cheaper place. So the guy making 50k elsewhere might make 100k in MFH and vice versa.

Sure, if you don't count the location you live in as a having any bearing on your "standard of living."

Obviously Harlem is a unique case, but poor blacks living in Harlem are not making $100k - they're probably making actual low/middle class salaries.

Do you deny that people can make way more money in MFH for the same job they do somewhere else? I wonder why everyone doesn't move there then? Oh, it's because their living space would be reduced to a fraction of what it was.

Obviously people value living in Manhattan. It's all good. But an objective standard of living measure would focus on tangibles. All else being equal, you certainly take a hit to objective standard of living for the sake of living in Manhattan.

i know plenty of blacks making middle class salaries, secretaries, assistants, etc. probably making 45-50K and living in harlem. anywhere else they'd be in a comfortable suburb.

what about MFH in and of itself counts toward standard of living? access to a wider variety of dining, recreation and entertainment in MFH is not enough since you have to have a certain income to take advantage of those things. living spaces are smaller. maybe good public transportation?

Not true.

MFH is cheap if you know how to do it.

For example: No point in owning a car. That alone saves you on car payments, gas, insurance and makes up for higher rents.

It does not even come close to making up for it. You save 300-400 dollars a month but also pay for taxis and public transit.

In are country people pay 900 dollars a month for a mortgage on a 3500 sq ft home, while you pay 2k for a shower in your kitchen. No it does not make up for it lol.

it's really more like $500 per month and you are assuming one car per household which is probably unlikely.

so for a young couple, it's $1000 in car costs and $1000 mortgage payment on 3500 sq foot home or $3000 apartment plus subway/taxis in NYC.

it no way makes up for it but a car isn't free of course.

All depends on what kind of car. If you strictly limit yourself to reliably getting from point A to point B, your amortized cost could probably be less than 150-200 per month.

Pretty sure you don't get a 3500 sq ft apartment for 3k in NYC.

Well, it does if you compare a luxury house and luxury car to a shitty apartment and the subway.

Middle class is 20-80th percentile.

20,000-90,000

Keep in mind that is household income and it is probably accurate for households having around 2 people...

a middle class person is dependent on wages, has one or more advanced degrees, and is able to accumulate personal wealth in the form of real property.

Really should be based primarily on net worth. Then maybe some weight to salary*reasonably expected number of earning years.

LOL @ some 160k biglaw faggot being upper middle class with 230k debt and getting laid off after a few years still at -120k and they had to scrimp that whole time to pay down that much.

TITCR. Add in family/kids too.

160k salary with 0 debt as a SINGLE MALE = upper middle class, even in NYC where u can comfortably save thousands with 0 debt and 0 interests.

having even 250k salary with debt and mortgage and car payments in Ohio with 2 kids and a wife will still be considered middle class.
