The feeling of the mid to late 90s is encapsulated by the lyrics "Just lying in the bar with my drip feed on. Talking to my girlfriend, waiting for something to happen. I wish it was the 60s I wish I could be happy I wish I wish I wish something would happen."

Things basically seemed ok for the first time in a long time yet there was a sense of ennui and vague dread. Then a bunch of stuff did happen - dot com crash, 9/11, Iraq War etc. and the world felt different.

I wish I was a little older in the late 90s I didn't appreciate it at the time because I was so young.

IDK if anyone really appreciated it other than people who were swimming in money working for dotcoms. I had friends I worked with in really shitty jobs in the early 00s who told me they had been at companies where they had car services picking them up every day. Not even programmers/tech people necessarily, just people lucky enough to work for one of those companies.

Here's something I seem to vaguely remember from the late 90s, but I'm not sure if it's actually real or just my memory playing tricks on me:

There was some sort of vaguely wiggerish-but-not-quite aesthetic going on then. I'm not really sure how to describe it... like white dudes in sports jerseys who had a kind of slackerish lifestyle. That whole scene seemed pretty chill. Then again, maybe I'm making too much of a 'thing' out of some fashion style.

I think I kind of know what you mean, like wear a baseball jersey or hockey jersey but have long hair and also be a little bit into bands like Guided by Voices or Pavement?

I mean I was kind of depressive in the late 90s but it wasn't because I thought things were objectively fucked, it was just my own issues.

that's because their songwriter was a depressive druggie, isn't it?

the REAL spirit of the 90's was more along the lines of mmmmmbop, if you wanna be my lover, livin' la vida loca, etc.
