And perhaps that is one of the greatbort’s recurring emotional tricks. It cannot easily state admiration straight. Earnestness would be exposed too quickly; grandeur announced in its own name would be embarrassing. So reverence has to arrive smuggled inside desecration. The joke provides cover for the feeling.
