There is a growing trend of spaces becoming less child-friendly, particularly in developed countries with lower birth rates and urbanized environments. This trend is most visible in countries like Japan, Germany, Sweden, the UK, the US, and South Korea, where there is increasing demand for child-free environments such as restaurants, flights, and social venues. These countries tend to have aging populations and a larger number of adults without children, which fosters a preference for quieter, adult-only spaces.

The trend is more prevalent among the middle and upper classes, particularly in urban centers like Tokyo, London, New York, and Seoul, where adults seek to enjoy stress-free environments without disruption. This shift has raised concerns about the growing divide between families with children and adults who prioritize personal comfort and convenience.

As this trend continues, it's possible we will see a further segregation of public spaces, with more child-free zones and specialized family-friendly areas designed to accommodate children. This could impact how public life and family dynamics evolve in the future.

Parenting is as essential to the human experience as death. We are running away from what makes us human. We are effectively tuning out the voice of God more and more every day.

Because middle and upper classes don't have kids in those cities. When they're ready to have kids they leave.

Agreed 100%. My kids are well behaved yet I noticed that I stopped getting invited to things once we had our second. IVF parents tend to give you a weird look like “wow instagram told me you aren’t supposed to have a kid before 35 and you’re only supposed to have 1!” My friends never even met my 3rd-5th.

I think a lot of it is that the “mother” can’t complain that it’s so hard to take care of 1 kid and “it takes a village!” when my wife sits there with 5.

Society seems way more friendlier/tolerant towards dogs than kids. If a kid makes a little noise in a restaurant, people start rolling eyes. Dogs bark all day, poop all over the place, people seem ok with that.

Every park I take kids to, there are unleashed dogs there. Outdoor spaces have now been taken over by dog daddies and mommies. And increasingly they are encroaching indoors too with the ESA bullshit.

Dogs are fucking horrible. Go to a restaurant with your kids and order family style and they hit you with mandatory 25% gratuity. Take 5 dogs to a restaurant and they’ll take selfies with you, give each dog a water bowl and a doggie treat, give you a free drink and laugh and smile while the eggs dry up inside.

When you’re young it’s easy to get carried away and believe that you can live for your “career,” trips away, new adventures, etc.

As you get older you realize that you don’t really like the aggravation of your job, it’s not thrilling, and going to do stuff and take fancy trips isn’t really worth it.

Kids connect you to your youth though. You’ll take a trip you otherwise wouldn’t. When you get older, having grandchildren and children to have shared memories and events with is especially nice.

The most miserable people in the old folks home are those that have no family and chose to always be single and never have kids.

The whole thing is pointless because you die and can’t take it with you. The only way to matter at all is to have kids. You cannot have a full life without them.

Roaches and mice share these feelings and theories about why life is worth it.

This is why a single female German cockroach can produce around 200 to 400 offspring in her 6-month lifespan. If we assume her 200 female descendants also reproduce at the same rate within that period, and considering the reproductive cycle, each of those descendants could also produce 200 to 400 roaches within the same timeframe.

In just two generations, this could lead to approximately 40,000 to 160,000 descendants. The rapid reproduction cycle and compounding effect contribute to this explosive growth.

Likewise, humans, who believe that the only source of joy in life is reproduction, may find themselves focused on creating offspring as a primary goal. Interestingly, studies have shown that the more intelligent a person is, the fewer offspring they tend to have.

Research suggests that individuals with higher levels of education and intelligence often delay childbearing or opt for fewer or no children due to various factors such as career ambitions, lifestyle choices, and access to contraception. This phenomenon, sometimes referred to as the "fertility-intelligence inverse relationship," has been observed in multiple studies across developed nations.

This trend suggests that intelligent individuals may prioritize personal development, creative pursuits, or societal contributions over reproduction, viewing fulfillment through a broader lens than just having offspring.

Meanwhile, individuals from lower socioeconomic backgrounds tend to have higher fertility rates due to various factors such as limited access to education, fewer family planning resources, and different cultural or economic incentives.

In these contexts, larger families can serve as a form of economic security or social support, with less emphasis placed on delaying childbearing for career or educational opportunities.

Additionally, there can be less emphasis on delaying childbearing for career or personal development compared to more educated populations, contributing to higher birth rates.

If I didn't have kids I would just drink all day and do nothing. Maybe read books if I felt really ambitious. Maybe live the Tommy T lifestyle. I don't know how childless people still get motivated to care about working hard at a "career" and everything after age 40.

Is that really your plan once your kids are grown and no longer want to spend time with you every day?

That sounds like a sad and pathetic life. What many parents fail to realize is that raising kids is a job that lasts 18 to 25 years.

Once that’s done, those kids will repeat the cycle, and you’ll be back to being on your own with nothing to do but either learn to enjoy yourself or fall into a routine of (drinking as you said) and doing nothing. Seems like you've already chosen the latter.

I was a bachelermo far longer than my friends and the vast majority of people I know, got married later than they did and had kids later than they did.

I traveled all over the place, I worked hard, I built stuff, I lived a lot.

I can say, unequivocally, that having, and spending time with, my children has been the crest of my life's wave regardless of whatever potential positive things may come or not come my way.

But I don't understand the incessant debate on this topic. There are a lot of factors that make me feel this way. We are fortunate. We have help. It isn't the case for everyone.

I don't get the handwringing over this stuff. People have more choices in their lives, generally, now. It shouldn't surprise anyone that some are choosing not to do what their parents did or others do. I don't see that as anything but a societal positive.

I do think the phones have more to do with it than people let on. Our brains are wired differently because of these things now, maybe they wire us to be less into things other than our own dopamine hits, relations with others bedamned. I think that's a bigger piece of this than we give it credit for.

Despite the trend described in op, which is real, people love seeing my kids out and about, so long as they're reasonably clean and well behaved. Women of all ages, from teens to old ladies stop and talk to them and say how cute they are. It's not that people don't want kids period, it's that they don't want the downsides that come with kids.

From a business perspective, it seems like making places child-unfriendly is a bad move. Child-having is bifurcating into two groups in the US: the extremely poor, for whom having a child represents very little opportunity cost or something which they won’t invest much time into anyways, and the very rich, who can afford to have children and for whom having children represents a certain level of social prestige. As long as you keep the undesirables out, the child-Havers probably represent the best customer for most socially-oriented businesses (restaurants and such).

The high income kid havers you describe do not want to eat at Chili's. And they barely have any kids anyway.

Their customer base is comprised of the people falling from the middle into the white trash hellscape and the people who are just going to throw their hands up and not bother having kids.

Hate to say it but even Chili's dinner for a family of 5 is probably too expensive for a middle class household.

Moving forward, if you don't have to deal with other parents' brats unless you have brats of your own, it will be amazing for childfree people.

I notice this a lot while traveling. Most of the time I plan smart things, but sometimes in big cities you can tell how absolutely hostile they are to children.

I took the kids to NYC and the Natural History Museum and their ticket system was down so we had to stand in line. They go slow as shit, so after 5 minutes of what looks like 30+ minutes of standing in line with my 5 and 7 year old, i take out my phone so they don't resort to punching each other. They start watching a cartoon peacefully on the floor, and some museum security guard RUNS OVER shouting at me that the kids can't sit on the ground. A similar thing happened at another NYC tourist attraction that should seemingly be FOR KIDS, but instead is tailored for 30 year old hipsters who still want to watch the Muppets.

Similarly we were on a fucking MINI TRAIN TOUR of some tourist city, and everyone else was like a 50 year old single person staring down my toddlers - because god forbid someone bring a child on a MINIATURE TRAIN.

I don't get how people raise kids in these cities. It just seems like everyone is contantly giving you the evil eye.

You're not supposed to bring kids into the city. That's what the suburbs are for. Suburbs are basically farms for kids, with tons of space where all the screaming and annoying behavior can just disappear into the air without bothering anyone. Bring them to the city when they're past the loud and annoying phase.
