I am 35 years old and I feel like a loser. I did everything I was supposed to do but nothing has panned out the way I hoped they would.

When I was 18 years old I was so optimistic and hopeful. I went to art school to become a fashion designer and then switched to community college because the school I chose was a for profit school.

Long story short is that I got my Bachelors in Fashion Design in 2016 and I tried to pursue that for 3 years when I decided it wasn’t taking me anywhere so I went back to school to become a teacher. I realized quickly I didn’t really want to do that so in 2020 I went to another school and got my Masters in US History.

Since 2019 I have been a substitute teacher making less than 35,000 a year and since I have tried to get a job in my field. No one will hire me as a college instructor because I don’t have experience working with adults even though I have five years of education experience.

Eventually this year I grew tired of just being a sub and I accepted a job offer at a non profit. If you haven’t figured it out yet I don’t like it very much.

While I am making more even with a pay cut due to more consistent work I have found that working at an office is quite depressing. I have found that I miss teaching but I also don’t want to go back to subbing. I have once again been attempting to get hired at colleges. I have been unsuccessful.

Now I’m debating if I should go back to school and become a special education teacher after all. I just feel so lost and disappointed in myself.

I have a masters and I’m barely making 45 k a year. I am not in a a career. I live with my parents and I am not doing a fulfilling job. I also owe so much in student loan debt. I have contemplated leaving my town and just starting over somewhere else. Some days I really feel so terrible. I feel like I screwed up even going to school. I don’t know what to do.

A masters that wasn't competitive to get into to signal status and conferred no technical skills isn't paying off. Wow!

I don’t get why people aren’t more aware of Engineering. Maybe back in the day it was a more obvious thing given the ubiquity of Pneumatic Tubes, WWII factories, and Star Trek.

Like you couldn’t do this lady’s job and not know what Engineering is https://wp.technologyreview.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/TRJ28Y.jpg

The point is that Engineering awareness causes one to understand what “college” is fundamentally. Without it, Losers don’t fully grasp their ignominy. There is no “slot” for Loser liberal artists. There is ignominy unless they throw a Hail Mary completion at OCI. There is no such thing as a chill 120 IQ Loser who graduates college and gets a job. There just isn’t. Fastidiously get internships by being Connected or having Clique characteristics or commit seppuku. I do not understand why anyone would think modernity is anything but suffering surrounded by Engineering contrivances. That’s all there is. You have the same life expectancy as Ben Franklin but you can swallow a device that does a sonar readout of the inside of your ass for your physician to interpret. “Work hard” and you’ll be laughed at. Ace OCI and you’ll be respected.

Edit: OYT had 10 Lost Years after college. That’s how long it takes. That’s the gestation period of ignominy. You can’t just waltz into anything as a Loser. You have to Lose. I Lost the election if 2020. And 2024 probably.

I went to college to study science out of love, but one of the first things I learned was that if I wanted to make a decent living I needed to be an engineer. In 1965 doing a tech startup was not a widespread thing, so "get a job" was the mantra. Engineering was the only degree that guaranteed a living wage with a BS, even if you were bottom of the pile. For me that was engineering awareness. My goal was to have an apartment without a roommate and a car. I had no family money or connections, so engineering was one of the few paths to economic independence open to me. I would not have known that had I gone the liberal arts route.

Accounting was probably another path to making a living, but I was in the wrong place for that. No regrets. I learned to solve problems regardless of domain. I'm certain I wasn't number 1 in my class (they didn't give us any indication of class rank), but I might have been most improved in terms of what I was coming out vs. going in. Undoubtedly lost some things along the way, but I was hayseed raw clay going in.
