I grew up and religion was all about how Jesus taught us to be kind and how we need to be kind to others, emphasize family, be forgiving, etc

Most churches now are Justin Bieber types singing songs like "i can only imagine" about how Jesus is so perfect and beautiful and awesome and we love Jesus so much. Anything you do on Earth is secondary, the only thing that matters is that you think Jesus is perfect.

I feel like 30 years ago Jesus was known as a teacher and now he's a teen idol.

Yeah, what is it with "i can only imagine"?

A congregation I attended for a little while had a hymnal they used for 90% of their hymns and then these binders of hymns that weren't in the hymnal. "i can only imagine" was in there.

I had never heard it before, they used it a lot in service. Pretty cheesy.

i would prefer songs that emphasis thanking Jesus for our life, and our world, and for teaching us how to be good to one another. I do not want to hear church songs about how hot Jesus was, or that he had a great head of hair or was 6'4", but I fear this is where whorship is going here, in America.

It reminds me a bit of the Talledega Nights scene where Will Ferrell keeps thanking the sweet baby jesus, but a bit more sexualized

I have a cousin who married an evangelical and we went to their church with them and there were like 4 songs about Jesus being tall. Nothing religious in them just songs of height. Felt odd to me but everyone worships in their own way.
