Does Inhouse care about you switching firms? Seems credited since you could basically coast for a few months before laetralling, then there’s always a ramp up period after you lateral.

Do you think this is because first biglaw to in house move tends to be to a workhorse position and then people transition to a more chill in house job two years later?

if you're leaving as 4-5th year, you're probably going to a corporate/legal/contracts/enterprise counsel 9-5 position with no leadership authority. it's not a workhorse but if you want to keep climbing the ladder to an AGC/GC role, pretty much have to lateral in today's world.

We're all biglaw refugees, so we get it. If you're at 5 firms in a decade, that will raise red flags and we'll want to see a local connection. Otherwise, don't sweat it.

As someone who jumped around a lot, this is very credited. I got shit training at my three biglaw firms in 4.5 years. A person can emerge after 4.5 years at one firm with shit training as long as the firm is busy enough that someone can hang around that long churning bills on diligence and copy/paste forms. But it's much more common for firm hoppers because "ramp up" in terms of getting enough hours is one thing. It takes longer to actually having the mid-levels, seniors and service partners convinced that you'll stick around enough to start giving you more responsibility and bothering to correct your mistakes and try to train you. As a lateral that's going to take until you've been staffed on at least 2 or 3 decently large deals, and it will take a while if things aren't crazy busy. And if they are crazy busy then there's even less chance that anyone is going to set aside time to try to invest in the new guy.

Mainly drafting and negotiation. I was never in a position where I had to be on a call coming up with arguments off the top of my head live with opposing counsel and with clients on both sides listening and invested in the outcome on the key deal points. The "best" associates in my class at my last firm were definitely doing this, and when I got to inhouse it was a skill a lot my peers felt comfortable with, and I had to build it on the fly. Also just pure reps. Like I haven't done any securities work in years and neither have any of my peers at my inhouse, but all of us were once corporate and securities attorneys. Something came up the other day about a Reg D and my peer was like "let's confirm with the corporate team, but I think it's x because I remember I did a couple deals at the firm..." I was thinking to myself that I would've kind of known what she was talking about 5 years ago when I was fresh from a firm but today she might as well have been speaking gibberish.

I mean, none of this is too hard to pick up later, so it's not like you can't recover or anything. But you can tell a difference between people who were good associates and really put in work at their firms and people who didn't, even years afterward. For some inhouse jobs it's a bad thing to be well trained. We hired a guy who came from a super uptight MFH firm and when he had to do higher volume commercial work here he annoyed the shit out of everyone because he couldn't prioritize and turned every tiny issue into WW3 requiring multiple VP approvals for signature.

Nobody cares if you switch firms once. 3 or more in 5 years may be a little too much though only cuz you seem like you’re unfocused or there’s something wrong with your personality/not getting along.
