The 1997 chart-topper "Can't Nobody Hold Me Down" destroyed music forever and it's only fitting that 30 years later two goons would ruin xo by being derivative losers. One is even called MASE lol

those are all terrilbe years imo the invention of the boy bands, mase and diddy. this is just music. seinfeld was ending. friends was taking its place in the zeitgeist which was so depressing.

the clinton stuff was exhausting. porn images took hours to download

1990 and 1991 were still part of the really shitty music period that went from around 1988-1991, where "80s music" was finished culturally and "90s music" hadn't gotten going yet.

Very wrong and you were likely too young to get what was happening. Fall 91 is the grunge breakout, but even if you want to call that the cutoff of the prior period hip hop is in this weird place like MC Hammer is massive and Vanilla Ice comes out, but it’s understood in real time that these are corporate co-opts and the better shit is happening without any major label support like Ice Cube going solo. In pop you have massive generational releases like Mariah Carrey first shows up, Madonna drops Vogue and Boyz II Men basically invent the entire playbook for male pop artists in the next 15 years.

Yes, I was there, and those are exactly some of the main reasons I didn't like the 88-91 transitional music period.

1990 is wrong because the most dynamic geopolitical and cultural changes are happening then ie people always want to point to 91 bc of grunge but if you expand it to 87/88 to 92 it’s a massive shift across every axis of the culture, politics, economy, intl relations etc etc. I recall there being a weird lull in the 97-98 range like handoffs had happened from cooler shit to gayer/dumber/lamer versions of the same shit and the first indications of how fucking terrible millennials’ taste was started to come through. EG LFO came along in that period and the boy bands are first starting and therefore at the lamest/most corporate/gayest. Or a band like Bush is a good example. They always kinda sucked but their second record that came out at the end of 96 was awful and you heard it on the radio all the time. TV was also in between waves as some of the core 90s stuff like Seinfeld ended but you didn’t yet have HBO at the golden age of TV level they reached by 99. Movies similarly were weirdly bad in that range after 94-96 being this huge indie breakout combined with awesome major studio movies and then 99 is obvs the goat.

Men in Black is gay millennial-targeted slop like Space Jam. Independence Day shits in its mouth and then fucks it into a coma.

It was the end of the Cold War, the death of 80s excess, and embrace of irony above all else. It was when the mainstream culture and zeitgeist became truly post-modern.
