A long time ago I saw the remake at the theater and my group couldn't believe how slow, terrible, and pretentious it was. We were laughing our asses off at it and it became a running joke for years. We were fucking howling when the cracked out negress came out of nowhere and started listing off her psychological traumas:

https://m.media-amazon.com/images/M/MV5BODM4NDdhOTUtM2ZlMy00NzVlLTlhYmEtOGYzYjc0M2NhYTc1XkEyXkFqcGc@._V1_.jpg

I was scrolling through HBO Max the other and saw the original up and decided to watch it out of curiosity. Holy shit bros, what a masterpiece, one of the best sci-fi movies of all time. It's amazing what a difference it makes to have actors with real stage presence rather than unserious clowns. Despite being way longer than the remake, it feels like an appropriate length, whereas the remake is 99 minutes but feels like 3.5 hours.

I had never watched any Tarkovsky movies or even heard of him but the guy seems fucking brilliant. Going to check out Stalker next.

(There's a great scene from this one, genuinely gorgeous movie if you like his style, which I see all the time in random discussions throughout 4chan tv with pepe the frog added to it, a very wholesomely wistful scene, and wish I could find it right now...)

What did u think of the actors in the original? I thought they were all phenomenal. dead wife is hot as fuck. even the mom is hot. the footage of the pilot's report at the start is incredibly well done. all of the male actors have great presence.

the levitation scene seems to be hyped a lot. I thought it was good but maybe not as good as people say unless the wife's frozen body after is considered part of the scene. Surprisingly, the long car ride through the tunnels (which is normally the type of scene I'd flag as awful) really works and is one of the better scenes in the movie -- and probably a much better choice than like... showing the guy getting on a rocket and flying to the space station.

saw the original in UG with artsy GF. didn't pay attention because I was trying to get my hands in her pants. watched it again at age 24 with army buddy, all we did was mock cheap effects as the movie was too pretentious. read the book at 30, which was actually good

One of my favorite movie memories from my late teenage years was when my Los Feliz art hoe trust funder gf and I would watch random obscure movies at home on rainy evenings, and her dad would occasionally walk past and ask what movie it was or say he really liked that one etc. he liked the Koyaanisqatsi vibe even though he’d never heard of it, and LOVED that we watched Chinatown, which we both randomly learned was his favorite movie (gorgeous Gen Xer as it turned out)
