Am a 2005 grad. Just got told by a second firm that I was otherwise a good fit, but they were looking for a 4th year or so.

Ironically, struck out on a couple inhouse positions because I wasn't experienced enough compared to the other finalist.

New goal...save as much as possible until they kick me out of my current firm, then do something completely different that I actually enjoy.

What kind of work do you do?

What would your chances be at partnership at a second firm if you did lateral?

What's something completely different that you actually like?

[answered above] Would the second firm take you as a 4th year if you offered to go in at that level? I can't imagine why they'd refuse to take someone more experienced at the same pay, unless they think you're a flight risk.

For the in-house gig, how much more experienced was the other guy? What was the pay like? Have you rejected worse in-house options?

Transactional

Who knows. Probably not. I don't think I am partner material. But thinking maybe I am, and just need a change of scenery.

What's something completely different that you actually like?

I liked my job in business in general product management and marketing before lawschool. Still regret going to lawschool. Think I could enjoy just starting over again in something on the business side where my law degree is essentially useless.

Would the second firm take you as a 4th year if you offered to go in at that level? I can't imagine why they'd refuse to take someone more experienced at the same pay, unless they think you're a flight risk.

Possible.. Although I don't know if that would help much, and losing $50k a year to do that seems like it doesn't make sense. I might as well just do that next year.

For the in-house gig, how much more experienced was the other guy? What was the pay like? Have you rejected worse in-house options?

Haven't had a chance to reject any jobs. Paid like $210k with bonus in all likelihood. Maybe more with a good year. Other guy was a junior partner.

Kind of surprising that a junior partner would take what sounds like a huge pay cut for that kind of job. I wish I knew more about in-house legal work.

It was an awesome job....incredibly cushy. Might have paid even more for him, especially with bonus. He might have been an income partner, so not as much of a pay cut....but I was surprised as well. I thought I had the job in the bag.

yes. At my firm I know that new income partners start at about $400k...so if they guy got $275k with bonus, or something like that, the difference is hardly noticable

TONS of biglaw burnouts end up lost in kickboxing underworld

this is what happens to lots of biglaw associates who burn out. we had a case with institutional client and boomer partner told me to assemble the "best team possible." there was a 7th year associate a few years ago who could write appellate briefs like a kid out in the rain -- some guys just have "it" and he was the best. anyway the guy flames out big time and goes off the grid. i really wanted him on my team -- found him competing at an underground kumite tournament in jakarta. i watched him win his first match from near the exit so he couldn't see me. after his match i went up to him while he was facing away taking off the tape on his fists and he out of nowhere, still looking away, says "you're a long way from home, t-unit." i told him i needed him for one last matter -- that we needed the best appellate brief writer on the planet, it might lead to more work but i couldn't promise anything, but that i would get his daily seamless $$ limit raised to $50. i'll never forget his expression -- just sort of stared off in the distance and said that was a different life, he's not even the same person anymore. he said it was good seeing me again & then put on oversized aviator sunglasses (likely to conceal his bruises) and disappeared out the back alley door into the rain
