Don't ever try to climb out if that happens again. People have literally been cut in half when the elevator starts moving.

Four years ago, I spent 2 weeks working on top of an elevator car. We were in a hospital building that required a seismic retrofit/upgrade to the elevator shafts, or the hospital could not be re-certified by the state to operate as a hospital. So we were riding the top of the elevator cars in order to have access to the structural steel in the elevator shafts.

The company just had one crew on the job, and we were doing 12 hours. But this was all insane because we were told the whole time by the contractor "if you don't finish in time, the hospital will shut down." It was quite bizarre, because they should have been running 2 shifts, 24/7 to make sure it got done. Plus we were welding the whole time, must have put down like two full fucking coils of wire every day. That's a lot.

Anyway Friday came, and Monday was the deadline. So we worked through the weekend. Ultimately we did not finish, and the hospital is now a "healthcare facility" that has doctors' offices, maybe a hospice or elderly care or something- but is not a hospital anymore.

It was surreal. I just could not believe the whole time that tens, if not hundreds, of millions were at stake and dependent on us finishing the work in time. And then we didn't, which was LJL. I still don't know what the fuck to make of all that, it was very anticlimactic and I would have expected big-time hospital execs, tall guys in suits, to be on the hospital floors cheering or yelling at us, standing there in a line like out of some kind of Johnsmeyer parody. Nothing. Just a "well. They are not getting recertified" remark from the GC on Sunday evening. I will never forget how fucking bizarre this was.

bizarre. but maybe an org with that lack of urgency and management skills shouldn't be operating a hospital anyway ha

I still have trouble processing it. And in this Tier 1+ city, everyone knows about the hospital from before the Bay Area exploded in population. So practically all the natives were born there, and any time this place is mentioned people will remark "yeah, it's not a hospital anymore. I think it closed" and I Laugh out loud, Just Laugh out loud knowing exactly what the fucking story was and that I was literally a part of it.
