Seems like there are a lot fewer black MLB stars now than in the 90s?

It was crazy to play against some of the schools that were really competitive in basketball. Their baseball teams were like the D5 mighty ducks. Ragtag as fuck, and the school clearly played favorites with budgeting. They didnt even have matching uniforms.
One of my alltime favorite memories was hitting a home run so massive against a hood school that the shortstop gave me a low five when I rounded 2nd base.
The Latinos were different. I played a summer ball game vs a private hood catholic school and they all looked like Jose canseco. They shut us down and I had our only 2 hits.

Baseball used to get NBA/NFL level athletes. Dave Winfield could have played any sport and chose baseball. Tony Gwynn also was a serious basketball player and in his less fat 80s incarnation was hitting triples and stealing bases constantly. Deion and Bo famously did both and would have been excellent if 100% baseball and healthy for longer.
Equivalent athletes today are almost certain to pick NBA or NFL. Both are culturally black leagues. NBA has the best money now. NFL a little lower but with more roster spots and the opportunity to start playing at the top level straight out of college which only a handful get in other sports.

Sure, but my point is that MLB of that era had enough appeal to blacks that they did it alongside football in spite of huge lobbying from NFL to specialize.
