gold is a traded commodity with fluctuating prices. It would be like arguing that your car price in 1990 to Microsoft stock. You should peg the price to a basket of goods that people actually bought back then (food, shelter etc) and compare. Under CPI that $500 in 1929 is $9,472.98. That makes more sense considering the car was affordable for middle and upper-middle class americans.
