What’s the most impressive transformation you’ve seen in a guy in his 40s?

Not to be depressing but I'm not sure I've seen many transformations of guys in their 40s. Most men are set on a path by then and they continue on whatever it is until retirement/death.
I remember one guy who was friends with my parents when I was growing up. He had a not so great sales job and wasn't highly respected in my hometown. Then one day, for whatever reason, he decided to run for the local school board. He worked really hard and he won the election. It really seemed to change his life. It gave him pride in himself and taught him that he could be a leader. I don't know the details but he seemed to become more successful after that.
