The Israeli Ambassador informed President Richard Nixon that "very serious conclusions" may occur if the United States did not airlift supplies. Nixon complied. This is seen by some commentators on the subject as the first threat of the use of the Samson Option.

Instead of fighting harder, they do something no ally had ever done - they roll nuclear missiles out of desert caves, make absolutely certain our satellites can see them, and send us a message: "Give us everything we need right now, or we start a nuclear holocaust."
Within hours, Nixon authorizes the largest emergency weapons airlift in history. Not out of friendship. Out of terror.
Israel wasn't threatening Egypt or Syria. They were threatening us - with a nuclear catastrophe. And it worked. We sent 22,000 tons of weapons. We've been sending $3.8 billion every year since. We veto UN resolutions we privately agree with. We defend Israeli actions that inflame the entire Muslim world against us. We've built our entire Middle East policy around one rule: never let Israel feel desperate enough to roll those missiles out again.
This isn't alliance. This is a protection racket. They showed us they'd burn down the neighborhood with us inside, and we've been paying tribute ever since. The bomb only had to come out once. The memory of October 1973 has controlled American foreign policy for half a century.
