The bathroom issue is interesting. At Citadel, the bathrooms were an ordeal, and women entering the Citadel created an issue. To explain: one of the key elements of being a "knob" at the Citadel is the total removal of all privacy and personal space. You are never alone, and as a knob, there is some degree of danger (sometimes physical danger) at almost all times. You live in the barracks, you have no door lock, upperclassmen can (and will) mess with you, yell at you, and "PT" you (push ups, sit ups, sweat parties (running in place with your rain coat on) at odd times - like the middle of the night. The only time you are truly "safe" is when you're at an academic building. The bathrooms were one of the worst parts, for the first few months, you have to shower as a group (all the knobs in your company have to line up and shower together while being yelled at or otherwise tormented), and it is intended to be degrading. It is deeply unsettling to be berated while you're naked. It also really sucks to be so close to other men naked, and being pushed into other guys naked. It sucks. It was one of the worst parts of being a knob (for me at least). The memory of my buddy - a giant black dude - getting pushed from behind and pressing into by back with his giant stinky black dick & balls is a bad memory, that happened 28 years ago and I'm still grossed out by it.
Because the showers sucked so bad, some knobs would do their best to avoid showering all together. As an upperclassmen, I had one really gross knob that I made a sign in sheet to make sure he showered, he smelled awful.
It's not just the showers, simply taking a piss could be miserable, as you had to (1) actually get to the bathroom, which meant having to walk past upperclassmen, some of which would mess with you at every opportunity - then there was the chance of being berated while taking a leak (or dump - some of the older battalions didn't have doors on the stalls). All knobs - or at least most knobs - preferred pissing in the small sinks in their room as opposed to dealing with this mess.
Part of being a knob is shared misery, and guys who did well at the Citadel embraced the misery and did things together. Being equally degraded, tormented, etc. was part of the deal and one of the reasons that guys chose to go to this place, to go through this crazy experience.
Introducing women into this environment presented a bunch of challenges. They cannot participate in these nasty fucked up things that the guys do. They can't go through the humiliation of the showers, they can't do the same physical activity, and they generally cry really easy (much quicker than a guy). You can say the most fucked up things imaginable to a male knob, but even under the best of circumstances, you can't degrade a women like that. Further, women need some degree of privacy, you can't strip it completely away like they did with men. Hence: issues with the bathroom.
When they integrated Nancy and Petra (and the other 2, Messer and Mentavelos), the choice was made to build female bathrooms in the battalions. They had locks, and get this: they had baths. Apparently women need a bathtub for something to do with vaginas or shaving legs or something. You can imagine the outrage, that these female knobs got this special perk. There were other perks as well - they had special groups to meet to see how they were doing, they didn't have to shave their heads (though their haircuts were pretty ugly), and they had different PT standards.
I wonder if the Mace is making a big deal about the bathroom because, in college the bathroom was a big deal for her.
Edit: to the school's credit, the guys basically didn't really give the girls special treatment at first. They treated the women awful, just like they treated the guys. The attitude was, basically, OK, they want to come to the Citadel, let them experience the place in all it's glory. The girls got fucking racked and PT'ed and all the rest, basically just like the guys. The result: it was a DISASTER and the lawsuits almost closed the school. From the lawsuits, faced with the integration of females, the leadership at the school had to make the choice of either closing the school (which was seriously discussed), or commit to dramatically changing the culture and basically all elements of the school that a woman could not be reasonably expected to endure. The fundamental change of the school - which I personally witnessed, being there Nancy's classmate starting in 96, was dramatic and depressing. With integration, they basically had to strip out (or attempt to strip out) much of what made the school worth going to. None of this was Mace's fault (or the others), after the supreme court ruled, women were coming. If you read the VMI decision, it is staggering to read of the imaginary world that the shitlib justices concoct where women could integrate into VMI or Citadel without fundamentally changing the place.
I don't know, maybe the place needed to change. I'm not sure there is a point to the brutality of the place, any more or less than there's a point to MMA or running a marathon or something like that.

Shannon Faulkner was the 1st, her fat ass lasted about half a day.
Nancy Mace and 3 others showed up in fall of 96. Two of the girls lasted a few months and then ended up suing the school for abuse.
Nancy transferred some credits so she was able to graduate one year before the other girl who started with her, her name was Petra.
Lost in the story is Nancy mace attended when her father general mace was the commandant. She was in the band. She did a pretty good job about staying out of sight and keeping her head down.
The other girl, she was a Czechoslovakian named Petra with an unpronounceable last name, Petra pretty much did the whole deal and her story is probably more interesting than Nancy's story.
Nancy is the first female graduate because of the credits she started with she graduated a year early.
Edit: not everyone loves Nancy mace. I like her, and I think she does well in politics as a female Citadel grad. However, the other girl, petra, was pretty much universally loved. I'm not sure what happened to petra, she went in the military in the Marine corps and I understand she's done very well.

to the question: what is the point of The Citadel or VMI? It's hard to answer. It is a "military school," but you don't need that kind of training to join the military, if anything, the experience that someone goes through at the Citadel do not mesh all that well with the modern military.
However, Citadel grads do very well in the military. They dominate SC state government, are well over represented in the medical and legal professions. Is it that the Citadel attracts an aggressive, adventurous kind of person and then socializes them over 4 years with other like minded people? Or does the experience of the school change a person? Or something else, like the fact that Citadel is nothing like your normal college experience, and you have almost none of the shared experiences of people your age who went to real college. Or something else. I don't know the answer to that.
