This is true but OP is in the neighborhood of a fair point that I have seen in discussions on XO before, but rarely: the first five years of the 90s were the best part and the back half was mostly just playing out the string and coasting on the wins of the first five years. Even like 99 in movies is just a culmination of all the changes that began in the 90-95 period as Indie films became the locus of cinema prestige. See also, a sportscenter broadcast from 1990 v 1999.

did popular music ever recover? some of the early 2000s stuff was okay - the strokes were really good - but even then it was all manufactured garage rock-lite and mall punk.

my nostalgia for the 90s isn't really tied to mainstream music. i was a hardcore scenemo. i actually clapped when cobain offed himself. i obviously mellowed with time. but music sucking on MTV in 1998 didn't move the needle for me. i thought that even the good stuff sucked.

Hell, there was even this weird Swing revival at the end of the 90's, which was super fun and a great way to meet girls. If drinking martinis and swing dancing with hot chicks at The Derby in LA was lame, color me a stupid faggot because those were some good times for me.

The different cultural era don't quite line up with the decades, of course.

For me, the span of the late 80's to early 00's pop culture era was the 90s. It divides in the Star Trek TNG era (87-94) and the Voyager era (95-01). 9/11 was just a couple months after Voyager ended. Both those things marked the true end of the 90s.

Early DS9 was like TNG. Then later when they dropped the Cardassians as the main villains and it became all about the Gamma Quadrant, it just got retarded, like everything else in the late 90s.
